  1. Freely available wave data Prepared by Hendrik Tolman Marine Branch Chief, EMC/NCEP Jose-Henrique Alves Senior Research Scientist, SRG at EMC/NCEP NOAA Center for Weather & Climate Prediction 5830 University Research Ct College Park, MD 20740 Henrique.Alves@NOAA.gov Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 1/8

  2. Data policies Big differences in data policies for different countries: USA: data generally freely available (Freedom of Information Act, FOIA). Exception is military classified data. Europe: much is by subscription, but more and more free sites too. Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 2/8

  3. Observations USA buoy data: National Data Buoy Center Not much data around Africa . http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov ESA Globwave project: Historical and near real-time data. http://www.globwave.org Free after subscription, with terms and agreements. Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 3/8

  4. USA models NOAA National Weather Service Data General NCEP web page with covering all NCEP data. http://www.ncep.noaa.gov Weather, waves, ocean, ice, SST, land . Marine Modeling and Analysis Branch http://polar.ncep,noaa.gov Full NOAA WAVEWATCH III data. Digital data: NOMADS OpenDAP / THREADS server: http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov Climate Forecast System reanalysis data: http://cfs.ncep.noaa.gov Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 4/8

  5. USA models Navy products Fleet Numerical products http://www.usno.navy.mil/FNMOC Wind and wave results. Navoceano I could not get in here, for US DoD only. Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 5/8

  6. ECMWF / MetOffice ECMWF and MetOffice (former UKMO) provide high- quality products, but generally for price. In previous workshop yvind Breivik from NMO (Norway) presented various websites that provided access to ECMWF data for free, but I could not get any of these to work. MetOffice (formerly UKMO) is running mesoscale weather modes for Africa, but I am not aware of partners and/or data distribution. Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 6/8

  7. Other JCOMM expert team on Wind Wave and Storm Surges web site. Now Wind Waves and Coastal Hazard Forecasting Systems http://www.jcomm.info/index.php?option=com_content&t ask=view&id=131&Itemid=37 No live data, but forecast system monthy intercomparison and much other useful information. Fall 2013 Ifremer Short Course on Ocean Waves 7/8
