Gender in French Every noun (such as words for things and people) has a gender in French. This means that nouns are either masculine or feminine: Feminine Masculine animal chien livre portable chambre chose id e r gle You cannot usually guess the gender from the meaning of the noun, or from how it looks or sounds: you have to learn the gender with the noun! The indefinite article To say a(or an)in French before a noun, you use un or une, according to whether the noun is masculine or feminine: un and une can also mean one , so we can translate un animal either as ananimal , or as oneanimal .
