  3. OVERVIEW You need to memorize the numbers in French and practice their pronunciation. Notice the difference: vingt et un (21) and vingt-deux (22) this pattern is the same for other numbers through 69 (soixante-neuf) quarante et un (41) quarante-trois (43) soixante et un (61) soixante-cinq (65) Yes, numbers in French are quite different, however once you understand the patterns it becomes easier

  4. IL Y A and COMBIEN Il y a (=there is, there are) does not change and it is used with the indefinite article and numbers: Il y a une chose/ il y a des choses. There is a thing/ There are some things Notice the following in the negative form: (It s always DE) Il n y a pas de livres (there aren t any books) Il n y a pas d examens (there aren t any exams just an example!) This is also valid for the expression COMBIEN DE (how many ) page 15 Il y a combien d examens? How many exams are there? Il y a trois examens (There are three exams) Remember: It s always combiende, singular or plural, and, of course, don t forget the apostrophe if the next word begins with a vowel.
