WHAT IS DEBATE? A CHALLENGING ACTIVITY TYPICALLY TEAMS OF TWO CHALLENGE ANOTHER TEAM OF TWO A CLASH OF ARGUMENTS DISCUSSING AND CONSIDERING THE PROS AND CONS OF A CONTENTIOUS ISSUE CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION

CANADIAN NATIONAL DEBATE TWO TEAMS PREPARE TO DEBATE A RESOLUTION, OR A MOTION THAT CLEARY HAS TWO SIDES TO IT. THE SIDE ARGUING FOR THE MOTION IS CALLED THE AFFIRMATIVE SIDE, ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE GOVERNEMENT THE SIDE ARGUING AGAINST THE MOTION IS CALLED THE NEGATIVE SIDE, ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE OFFICIAL OPPOSITION SOUNDS FAMILIAR RIGHT? CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
THIS HOUSE WOULD BAN HOMEWORK GOVERNMENT OPPOSITION IN FAVOUR ARGUMENTS TO SUPPORT THE CHANGE AGAINST ARGUMENTS SHOULD EITHER COMPLETELY DISAGREE OR SHOW WHY THE MOTION IS UNREASONABLE OR FLAWED CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
ROLES EVEN THOUGH TEAMS TAKE A DIFFERENT SIDE THEY STILL HAVE THE SAME BASIC ROLES WHICH ARE: DELIVER SPEECHES THAT DEVELOPS SOLID ARGUMENTS DEFEND ARGUMENTS THAT WERE ATTACKED BY THE OTHER SIDE ATTACK THE OTHER SIDE S ARGUMENTS KNOWN AS CLASH DELIVER A REBUTTAL THAT EXPLAINS WHY YOUR SIDE WON THE DEBATE CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
WHO ARE THE PLAYERS IN A DEBATE GOVERNMENT PRIME MINISTER 1ST SPEAKER MINISTER OF THE CROWN 2ND SPEAKER OPPOSITION TEAM LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION 1ST SPEAKER DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION 2ND SPEAKER SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE MODERATES THE DEBATE CLERK TIMES THE SPEECHES AND GIVES SIGNALS JUDGES - USUALLY 1 OR 3 THEY SCORE THE DEBATE AND DECIDE A WINNER CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION

Prime Minister Understanding the proceedings of the debate is key. The basic structure of all debates remains consistent, and is very simple. Leader of the Opposition Minister of the Crown Deputy Leader of the Opposition Rebuttal Rebuttal CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
Debating as though in Parliament Roles (Prime minister, Member of the Crown ) Referring to other debaters by their title (Prime minister Leader of the Opposition ) Calling the Chairperson Mr./Madame Speaker Addressing all remarks to the speaker of the house Government Vs. Opposition Resolutions = Bills CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
Types of resolutions - Policy - Values Policy resolution - A change or improvement must be made to the status quo (outline the need for change) - The Government must provide a plan for action/change Values resolution - The Government must argue for, and the Opposition must argue against CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
THINK OF A DEBATE THINK OF A DEBATE as a verbal tennis match, using several (6) as a verbal tennis match, using several (6) tennis balls! tennis balls! Each team should prepare 3 arguments to prove their case. A ball represents an argument.

Break to Prep for Rebuttal In some provinces when you begin debating in Junior High you are offered a 2 minute break to allow each side time to prepare their rebuttal. In High School you have to go right into a rebuttal. CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION

Content and Evidence (20) Does the debate present relevant facts, and examples? Does the debater have strong knowledge of the subject, and does he/she back up the knowledge? Argument and Reasoning (10) Does the debater understand what is being debated? Does the debater comprehend the burdens for the position he/she has taken? CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
Organization (20) Does the debater present material in a clear, logical and coherent manner? Does the debater allow the judges to follow his speech effectively? Presentation and Delivery (20) Is delivery of the speech comfortable and easy to comprehend? Refutation and Rebuttal (20) Does the debater identify, summarize and refute the opponent s case? Is the debater capable of handling objections to his or her own case? Does the debater take time to summarize both sides of the debate? Debating Skills (10) Does the debater understand the style of debate and adapt? Discussion used back in the late 90s in Alberta and Saskatchewan Cross X used across the country for Junior High until around 2011 Parliamentary still used in some provinces ie Manitoba British Parliamentary (BP) British Style Parliamentary 4 Teams of 2 World s Style a combination of CN and BP Canadian National (CN) a Canadian version of BP Consensus the rest of the country is now learning this style and we will use it at our National Seminar CANADIAN STUDENT DEBATING FEDERATION
