Funders Mapping Elsevier Foundation Board Meeting October 2020
Outline 1. Funders Mapping 2. Key takeaways 3. Focus on Health & Innovation 4. Focus on Women in Science 5. Focus on Research Capacity Building in Developing Countries 2
1- Funders Mapping The mapping identified donors (i.e. corporate and private foundations, government agencies and donor funds) that are funding interventions similar to EF s three domain areas, namely: DOMAIN 1 - Women in Science (Global): Support for (1) institution level change; (2) career progression; and (3) gender dimension in research DOMAIN 2 - Health Information and Innovation in Underserved Communities (Global): Support for programs/projects highlighting the intersections of health information, innovation and technology as to increase impact. DOMAIN 3 - Building Research Capacity in Developing Countries (in Higher Education) The funder mapping was conducted by TripleMinds. TripleMinds is a social business that assists non-profit organizations with grant seeking advice, proposal writing, as well as M&E support (developing M&E frameworks, carrying out evaluations and reviews). 3
2 - Key takeaways In general, there tend to be a large number of funders globally engaging in domain area 3 of EF Research and Development (public funders like USAID, EC, DFID etc. as well as many universities and other institutes, foundations and funds). The same goes for domain area 2 Health and Innovation . For domain area 1 Women in Science less donors seem to be focusing on this specific subsector. Many of them are funding US scientists and only a small number of donors were identified that offer such schemes particularly for developing countries. This might be an interesting entry point for EF. 4
2 - Key takeaways (contd) Overall, smaller funders are less embedded in the larger health innovation ecosystem. Digital Health/Health Innovation are usually areas that tend to be funded by the larger, mostly corporate foundations (e.g. Pfizer, GSK, Roche, etc.). Mainly because such interventions also need large investments (especially when technological innovations are included). Many of the larger funders see themselves as part of larger networks that work towards attaining Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include institutional donors (e.g. JICA, Irish Aid) and many corporate foundations. All these are well connected to the core partners of the larger ecosystem (e.g. WHO, UNICEF and other UN agencies). Many development agencies only have health/innovation as a cross-cutting theme, as there is generally more focus on economic development/empowerment/democracy (e.g. GIZ, ADA, DEZA). 5
3 - Focus on Health & Innovation Data to leverage better health Use of AI to develop digital health solutions Most common themes: HIV/AIDS, maternal deaths, NCDs prevention and treatment, reproductive health Suggestions: Partnerships to disseminate or collaborate on health solutions Conference led by Elsevier/The Lancet to discuss digital innovations in healthcare how can we work towards achieving SDG3 during this decade of action? 6
Potential partners Health & Innovation Organization Just as EF, they see digital health as an innovation enabler to support healthcare providers and empower patients along the entire care pathway from raising disease awareness, to screening, diagnosis and monitoring and to support the achievement of SDG 3. + The foundation is currently chairing the Broadband Commission Working Group on Digital Health, which aims to develop recommendations for policymakers on sustainable digital health solutions that address national health priorities. Novartis The Sanofi Espoir Foundation aims to reduce healthcare inequalities and poverty among the world s poorest populations, they also have a strong transversal focus on promoting innovative health technology across all their programs. E.g. Synapse platform, platform to better understand the ecosystem of actions, organizations, experts and resources in the area of maternal and newborn child health so as to improve the networking and cooperation among these + other mobile health apps. Sanofi Espoir Foundation Support of progressive initiatives (also in healthcare) where the proposed innovation still has to prove itself, meaning that the founder is finding it difficult to attract sufficient funding. Some of their health-related initiatives they funded in the past are e.g. Mobile Connectivity (using mobile phones for improved diagnosis, treatment and payment in case of infectious diseases in Kenya) Achmea Foundation As part of their Global Health initiatives, the Building the Movement for Health Equity program, in partnership with Health Corps, connects outstanding young leaders from the US and developing countries in high-impact, skills-based yearlong fellowships at organisations working for global health equity (regional focus: Africa). Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation 7
4 - Focus on Women in Science Funders provide mainly access to funding for research through fellowships, awards, scholarships etc. A great number of funders aim at empowering women in STEM by providing them with opportunities to develop, network and gain exposition at an international level Career development is also a main theme in funders programs 8
Potential partners Women in Science Organization DR is supporting pilot schemes to enhance career opportunities for women scientists in infectious diseases. Academic and research institutions in 9 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. --> Elsevier/EF could contribute and provide in-kind contributions to the program as to strengthen its partnerships with UN organisms. Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) EF could invite/collaborate with AAUW during the AAAS ceremonies (with the chapter of the city in which the AAAS GG is organized) American Association of University Women (AAUW) 9
5 - Focus on Research Capacity Building Similarly to the WIS domain area, a lot of funders provide fellowships, grants to researchers in developing countries A large number of programs also focus on the following themes: Career development International Exposition Networking 10
