Welcome to Further Maths at Thomas Rotherham College
Congratulations for thinking about Further Mathematics at TRC! Further Maths is one of the most well respected subjects by universities and employers alike. It also gives you the potential to earn more money in later life. Statistics have shown that doing Further Maths increased how much students were earning 6 years after completing their A levels more than any other subject.
What skills do I need to study Further Maths at TRC? You need to have a good work ethic and strong algebra skills. Algebra is the foundation of A Level and so we are going to suggest some algebra practise that you might do between now and starting a maths course at TRC in order to give you the best start possible. You need to love maths. You will be doing 9 hours a week of Maths and Further Maths lessons and at least the same amount of work again at home.
What will I study? Two thirds of the Further Maths course is pure maths. The pure maths you do includes Complex Numbers, Vectors, Matrices and Proof amongst other things. The final third of Further Maths is applied maths. The exam board offers Statistics, Mechanics and Discrete applied options. You have to do two. At Thomas Rotherham College we do the Statistics and the Discrete options.
How is Further Maths taught at TRC? At TRC, A Level Further Maths is taught alongside A Level Maths. In the first year you will have 4.5 hours a week of Further Maths in a class with just Further Maths students where you learn all the material for AS Further Maths. You will also have 4.5 hours a week of normal maths lessons where you are in mixed groups with students just studying Maths and not Further Maths. All Further Maths students will be entered for the AS Further Maths exam in summer 2021. This doesn t count towards your final A Level grade but is very valuable when it comes to applying for university.
Graphical Calculator Amazon Link to Calculator We use the CASIO graphical calculator. We have found that students do much better in exams if they have one of these calculators to help. They draw graphs, solve equations and are just generally very clever. Please don t buy one before you come to college. We buy in bulk and sell them at cost. We don t pay VAT, so we get a very good deal. We are considerably cheaper even than Amazon! Bursaries are available to buy the calculator for students that need help with the cost.
Further Maths is a very rewarding subject, but it is not always the easiest. We would like you to have been predicted at least a 7 by your school but an 8 would be even better if you want to get one of the top grades. If you pick to do Further Maths at TRC then you must pick 4 subjects. Maths and Further Maths are two of them and then you need to do two more subjects alongside them.
Any Questions? If you have any questions, then please email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. My email address is ruth.faulkner@thomroth.ac.uk. If you are thinking about studying maths at university or a maths related degree, then you should definitely do A Level Further Maths. We hope to see lots of you doing Further Maths at TRC in Sept!
