Airspace and Noise Engagement Group - DFT Policy Updates 22/04/2021
Topics Global Travel Task Force Future Aviation Strategy Decarbonisation Night flight consultation Airspace Modernisation Moving Britain Ahead March 25
Global Travel Task Force The first Global Travel Taskforce was established in October 2020 to consider what steps the Government could take, both domestically and on the international stage, to enable the safe and sustainable recovery of international travel. The COVID-19 roadmap out of lockdown included a commitment to relaunch the Global Travel Taskforce to consider a safe return of international travel. The Global Travel Taskforce has produced the Traffic Light system. This does mean that travelling won't be as straightforward as normal. In order to try to provide greater guidance to those who wish to travel abroad, we will introduce a Green Watchlist category. This public list will support travellers as they book travel to help identify the countries risk of moving from green to amber. We endeavour to provide a forward look on potential traffic light changes where possible. Early May: set out which countries fall into which category and confirm whether international travel can resume from 17 May. Moving Britain Ahead March 25
Future aviation strategy The Government is continuing to develop a strategic framework for the longer-term recovery of the sector, which will focus on building back better and ensuring a successful UK aviation sector for the future. This will be published later this year. Air Passenger Duty (APD) - HMT launched the consultation on aviation tax reform on 23 March 2021. The consultation will be open for 12 weeks until 15 June. Moving Britain Ahead March 25
Decarbonisation The CCC expects aviation to become the second highest residual emitter in 2050. In response, we have established the Jet Zero Council We have also established the Jet Zero Council SAF Delivery Group. DfT is planning to consult on a Net Zero Aviation Strategy in the coming months. We would welcome your views on aviation decarbonisation through that consultation. The UK was the first major economy to pass laws to end our contribution to climate change by 2050. We will be setting out ambitious plans in the run up to COP26 on aviation and climate change. It is critical that aviation plays its part in delivering the UK s net zero commitment. Moving Britain Ahead March 25
Night Flight Consultation We continue the analysis of responses received to Part 1 of the night flights consultation (which closed on 3 March). We anticipate publication in late July, of our policy decision for the night flights regime to commence in October 2022. Part 2 of the night flights consultation, on longer-term policy reform, remains open until 31 May 2021. Overall, 950 responses to our consultation were received. Moving Britain Ahead March 25
Airspace Modernisation The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are currently reviewing the Airspace Modernisation Strategy and a revised version will be published in Q4 2021. Airspace Change Organisation Group (ACOG) are currently reviewing the Masterplan and will publish Masterplan iteration 2 in Q4 2021. Following the ACOG recommendations, in March 2021 the DfT and HMT agreed a funding support package of up to 5.5million for the FASI N and FASI-S programme due to exceptional circumstances due to COVID-19. The CAA recently held engagement sessions, following this the CAA will be setting out their engagement strategy shortly. Moving Britain Ahead March 25
