SEX SELECTION LEADS TO DANGEROUS GENDER IMBALANCE AND IMPORTANCE OF GENDER EQUALITY Mrs Sangita sutradhar Assistant professor
INTRODUCTION Sex selection is the attempt to control the sex of the offspring to achieve a desired sex. Pre implantation (Ericsson method) / Post- implantation (abortion and infanticide). In countries such as India, China, Indonesia and Nepal, sons have been favored over daughters.
Due to sex selection the following gender imbalance can be seen: (1) Imbalance in sex ratio at birth: SEX RATIO AT BIRTH(2010-12) STATE Andhra Pradesh 914 Assam 922 Bihar 909
(2) Imbalance in sex ratio STATE SEX RATIO Uttar Pradesh 912 Assam 958 Bihar 918
(3) Imbalance in percentage of singles PERCENTAGE OF SINGLES SEX MALE 26.1% FEMALE 19.9% (4) Injustice to women population : Today around 140 million women are believed to be missing around the world as a result of son preference, including gender-biased sex selection.
What is gender equality? Gender equality denotes women having same opportunity in life as men. The interest, need and priorities of both men and women are taken into consideration.
Importance of gender equality To create a balanced society. It can lead to peace. To ensure economic growth. Important for social development.
Contitue - It leads to better legal protections It reduces human trafficking
CONCLUSION Hence it can be concluded that sex selection leads to gender imbalance ,therefore, the gender biased sex selection should be prohibited through enforcement of strict laws. Gender equality prevents violence against women and girls. Societies that value women and men as equal are safer and healthier. Gender equality is a human right.
