Gender in French We already know that all nouns (e.g., words for things, people, countries) have a gender in French. All nouns are either masculine or feminine. Read these sentences. Look carefully at the article and choose the correct noun. Listen to the definite article to help you choose the correct missing words. Circle the correct one each time. Make a note in English of the extra details you hear. couter Le / La ? Speaking exercise Parler Partner A Read each sentence out to your partner in French, but do not say out loud the word that is crossed out. You must decide which French word for the should be used (before the noun that you will not say!). Your partner has to listen to the word for the and work out which word you missed out. They will choose between two pictures they have in front of them. They will then write out the whole sentence in French so give them time to do this. Partner B Listen to your partner reading out 5 sentences. For each, tick the noun that matches the word for thethat your partner says. They will not read the French noun but you will be able to tell which noun is missing by the gender of the word for the. Then try to write each whole sentence that your partner has read out. You might not know some of the words, but try to spell them anyway.

Making nouns and articles plural To make a noun plural i.e. to talk about more than one thing, in French we add an s (most of the time), just the same as in English: Masculine les les the the the You do not pronounce the s on the end of the words. It is a silent final consonant (SFC).
