General Achievement Test (GAT) 2022 Overview
The General Achievement Test (GAT) for 2022 is undergoing changes to measure literacy and numeracy skills against new standards. The test aims to give students confidence, assess achievement, and identify areas needing support. It consists of two sections assessing various skills and will be held on September 7. All VCE students and Senior VCAL students are expected to participate.

General Achievement Test (GAT) Information Session #3 2022
Background The GAT is changing in 2022 Literacy and numeracy skills measured against new standards Retaining existing purpose ensuring VCE external and school-based assessments have been accurately and fairly assessed
Why is the GAT changing? Literacy and numeracy are essential skills needed in everyday life and are part of the curriculum in both VCAL and VCE By testing literacy and numeracy for all students, the GAT will: Give students confidence that they are ready to move on to further study, training or employment Provide students an opportunity to prove their literacy and numeracy skills regardless of the pathway they choose Provide a measure to assess achievement and help identify where students may need more support
Test Structure The GAT will held on Wednesday 7 September, split into two sections: Section A will assess literacy and numeracy skills Section B will assess skills in mathematics, science, technology, the arts and humanities A (scientific) calculator and an English and/or bilingual printed dictionary is permitted for use in both sections.
Test Schedule Time Task Section A: Literacy (Reading and Writing) and Numeracy Reading time Writing time to complete Section A which includes one writing task with two parts: 50 numeracy multiple-choice questions 50 reading multiple-choice questions 9:30-9:45am 9:45-11:45am 11:45-1:15pm Break Section B: General knowledge and skills Reading time Writing time to complete Section B which has: one extended writing task 25 mathematics, science and technology multiple-choice questions 25 arts and humanities multiple-choice questions 1:15-1:30pm 1:30-3:00pm
2022 Test Cohort All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3 4 sequence are expected to sit Section A and B of the GAT (including Senior VCAL students) All Senior VCAL students are expected to sit Section A
Student familiarisation Section A Sample items have been released Indicative of the types of content students will encounter in this section A of the GAT The standards for literacy and numeracy are derived from Level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). The ACSF is a national framework that describes individual s performance in the five core skills of learning, reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy arranged into a series of progressively complex levels. Section B Questions will be similar to those in historic GAT papers, available online

Centres Students are required to be assigned a GAT test centre Either at their home school or at another provider Application to be a centre or notification of transfer required
Special Examination Arrangements To maximise student accessibility to the GAT through the use of fair and reasonable options; including: Rest breaks Extra working time Separate rooms Use of computers and/or assistive technology Readers, Scribes, Clarifiers Alternative formats (e.g. large print) Requires application to the VCAA for approval
Applying for Special Examination Arrangements Section A only students (Senior VCAL) Via the VCAA Special Provision Online (SPO) system Indicate the nature of the provision being sought Evidence is required to be submitted
Exemptions A student may be deemed eligible for GAT exemption if they: have a condition, circumstance or impairment for which arrangements cannot reasonably be made. are prevented from sitting the GAT by injury, illness, personal trauma or a serious intervening event are employed and cannot be absent from work (evidence from the employer is required)
Reporting Calculation Results against three skill areas: Reading, Writing and Numeracy Section A outcomes will be used with Section B (where both are completed) Reported against the standards Format GAT Statement of Results Not referenced on Senior Secondary Certificates For students who do not meet the standards, resits will be available for both continuing and exiting students.
