  1. Today Topic On Determinism .

  2. Freedom Generally means that man * is a free agent and can do precisely what he chooses to do. It is for him do decide whether he wants to sin or to follow the path of virtue . He is not tied down by individual or society or by any relationships, even God.

  3. *According to determinism ,human will is completely determined by cause . The Determinists deny out right any freedom of will. They hold that every event in the universe , the human will included , is bound by the iron grip of eternal, and immutable laws. There is no freedom anywhere , only an unbending necessity. In another word, determinism is known as Necessitarianism which denies freedom of the will. According to this doctrine , our will is under the control of external laws. The advocates of determinism put forward the following arguments in support of their view : * Determinism tries to justify itself on psychological grounds. Psychology of voluntary action implies determinism . Our volitions are determined by our motives and desires . Volitions is determined by the strength of motives . The strength of motive again , is determined partly by the physical and social environment , and partly by the character of the individual . Again , character of the individual is determined partly by heredity and partly by the structure of the individual s nervous system . therefore , our volitions are rigidly determined. Moreover , the fact that human conduct can be predicted if all the antecedent circumstances are known beforehand , implies determinism . So there can be no freedom of will.

  4. * Determinism advances metaphysical arguments in its defense . The law of causality contradicts the doctrine of will . A free will without being determined by antecedent circumstance would be an event without a cause . This is impossible . According to the law of causation , there can never be an uncaused phenomenon either in nature or in mind . Materialism is another point in favour of determinism . According to materialism , mind is only a by product or epiphenomenon and as such it can have no causal power . Consequently , there can be no freedom of will . Pantheism necessarily leads to determinism . According to pantheism , God alone is real ; the world and the individual mind are only illusory appearances . Therefore, the question of free will does not arise.

  5. * Determinism has also given theological grounds in its favour. If God is regarded as omnipotent and omniscient, there cannot be any freedom of will. God foresees all our actions . God not only foresees future phenomena of nature , but also the future actions of men. Foreknowledge implies pre determination .God has already determined the course of the world and human actions. Therefore , men have no power to act freely. * Determinism advances moral grounds in defence .Freedom of will is believed to be a necessary postulate of moral life. But indeterminism will make moral life impossible . If our choice is arbitrary , if our conduct does not follow from our nature as an effect , we cannot , then, be held responsible for our actions. Therefore , on moral grounds also determinism is inescapable.
