Exam guidelines: Mendel Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) was an Austrian monk who is regarded as the father of genetics. Mendel carried out pioneering work using pea plants to study the inheritance patterns of a number of traits (characteristics). Mendel observed that characters could be masked in one generation of peas but could reappear in later generations. What we now call Mendelian genetics is the study of inherited characteristics.

Do you know all these genetic terms? When both chromosomes have identical copies of the dominant allele for a gene, the organism is said to be homozygous dominant for that gene. These two different versions of gene A create a condition known as heterozygous. Only the dominant allele (A) will be expressed. When both chromosomes have identical copies of the recessive allele for a gene, the organism is said to be homozygous recessive for that gene. Genes occupying the same locus or position on a chromosome code for the same trait and are said to be alleles. Homologous chromosomes Maternal chromosome that originated from the egg of this person's mother. Paternal chromosome that originated from the sperm of this person's father.
Monohybrid Crosses A monohybrid cross examines the inheritance of one trait, e.g. the inheritance of flower color in peas Information to understand and know before doing a Monohybrid cross: Know all relevant terminology ie dominant/recessive +homozygous/heterozygous + genotype/phenotype + parents (P)/offspring (F) + ratios Characteristic = phenotype Key = genotype Sometimes a Monohybrid cross is called a Punnett Square or a Genetic cross
