  1. Versioning & Naming Dru Smith NOAA s National Geodetic Survey Jason Bond Canadian Geodetic Survey With lots of help from Mike Craymer, Kevin Ahlgren, Jianliang Huang, Ryan Hardy, John Crowley, David Avalos-Naranjo April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 1

  2. Outline NATRF2022 NAPGD2022 April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 2

  3. NATRF2022 (et al.) Initial releases: NATRF2022.v1.a.US.0.0.0 NATRF2022.v1.a.CA.0.0.0 The USA will also release: PATRF2022.v1.a.US.0.0.0 CATRF2022.v1.a.US.0.0.0 MATRF2022.v1.a.US.0.0.0 April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 3

  4. NATRF2022 Frame name. Other options for the USA only: PATRF2022 CATRF2022 MATRF2022 NATRF2022.v1.a.US.0.0.0 To which ITRF is this frame mathematically defined? Country specific sub-version information for updates that are large, medium or small, respectively. v1 = ITRF2020 v2 = Next ITRF after ITRF2020, but not an updated release of ITRF2020 No set rules on what drives these sub-versions, only that they must be logical and that a.b.c means large.medium.small changes. Country in which this frame is valid. Which release of the aforementioned ITRF? a = First release of ITRF2020 (or later) b = Second release of ITRF2020 (or later) etc. Updating b means c goes to 0. Updating a means b.c goes to 0.0 April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 4

  5. Changing the name of NATRF2022 NATRF2022 is likely to remain the name of the official frame in the USA and Canada for decades to come Updates are tracked through the version numbering scheme in the previous slide A new name will only come when a new frame is defined Meaning a new equation is adopted, defining a relationship between some ITRF and the new frame that replaces NATRF2022 This new frame would be given a new name April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 5

  6. NAPGD2022 Consists of dozens of sub-products (spherical harmonic coefficients, grids of values, grids of standard deviations of values, etc.) distributed among these primary elements: GM2022 GEOID2022 SGEOID2022, DGEOID2022 DEFLEC2022 SDEFLEC2022, DDEFLEC2022 GRAV2022 DEM2022 April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 6

  7. NAPGD2022 Further complicating this are the existence of separate products in the Guam/CNMI and American Samoa regions Used solely by the USA A single version number for each element of NAPGD2022 was considered Abandoned after substantive debates about its complexity In favor of a single version for the entire datum, with caveats April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 7

  8. NAPGD2022 First release: NAPGD2022 v1 (v1a?) Next release: NAPGD2022 v2 (v2a?) Etc. Version number Sub-version code Whether the first release is v1 or v1a is still being finalized. This character (whether nullor a ) should almost never change see later slide. April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 8

  9. CGVD2023 Updated datum, adopting a sub-set of NAPG2022 products NA only Possible adoption of name NAPGD2022 in the future GM2022 GEOID2022 SGEOID2022, DGEOID2022 DEFLEC2022 SDEFLEC2022, DDEFLEC2022 GRAV2022 DEM2022 April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 9

  10. CGVD2013 First release: CGVD2013 v1 (v1a?) Next release: CGVD2023 v2 (v2a?) Etc. April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 10

  11. NAPGD2022 four rules for versioning 1. USA, Canada, Mexico agree to only ever update NAPGD2022 as a tri-country group. This includes computing updates to GEOID2022 as a tri-country effort. 2. The three countries agree to a semi-regular (3-5 year) cycle of evaluating NAPGD2022 for a potential version change. a) During this cycle, small, proposed changes are put aside in a to do list b) Emergencies/Blunders may break this rule but only if all three countries agree i. This is where a sub-version code of a or b might be introduced April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 11

  12. NAPGD2022 four rules for versioning 3. At the end of each evaluation cycle, the three countries meet to discuss and decide whether to update NAPGD2022 a) If any one country wants to update, all three countries agree to update 4. The to do list is addressed, changes are made, and the entire package of NAPGD2022 is released under a new version number a) This includes documentation on what did and did not change, and where April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 12

  13. Questions? April 23, 2025 Industry Workshop on modernization of NSRS and CSRS 13
