Geometry Vocabulary Packet Mrs. Janice 7thGrade Mathematics
CIRCUMFERENCE: the distance around a circle. 2 C r = C d = T
PI: is a number - approximately 3.142. It is the circumference of any circle divided by its diameter. The number Pi, denoted by the Greek letter - pronounced 'pie', is one of the most common constants in all of mathematics. C D =
ANGLE: the figure formed by two rays sharing a common endpoint called a vertex.
ADJACENT ANGLES: angles that have a common vertex and share a common side between them. 1& 5& 3& 3& 4& 1 5 2 2 4 5 1 2 4 3
VERTICAL ANGLES: angles formed by intersecting lines and sharing only a vertex. 2& 4 5 1 2 4 Look for the Bow Tie! 3
When 2 lines intersect, they make vertical angles. 75 105 105 75
Vertical angles are opposite one another. 75 105 105 75
Vertical angles are congruent (equal). 150 30 150 30
COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES: angles whose measures add up to 90.
Complementary angles add up to 90. 30 40 50 60 Adjacent and Complementary Angles Complementary Angles but not Adjacent
SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES: angles whose measures add up to 180.
Supplementary angles add up to 180. 40 120 60 140 Adjacent and Supplementary Angles Supplementary Angles but not Adjacent
Congruent Angles The same shape and size. Two shapes are congruent when you can Turn, Flip and/or Slide one so it fits exactly on the other.
POLYGON: a closed plane figure made by line segments. NOT Polygons WHY?
36. REGULAR POLYGON: a polygon with all sides congruent and all angles congruent.
Irregular polygons A polygon that does not have all sides equal and all angles equal. A polygon is "regular" only when all angles are equal and all sides are equal, otherwise it is irregular.
PARALLEL LINES: coplanar lines which never intersect. XY WZ Q X 1 2 Y 3 4 W 5 6 Z 7 8 P
Cross-Section A cross section is the shape we get when cutting straight through an object.
Extra Credit Opportunity Write an Essay on unit 1 Operations with Rational numbers, 2 Expressions and Equations, 3 Ratios and Proportional Relationships. Each unit should be a separate essay. Essays should be at least half a page to receive credit for the assignment. See full size image
