Gifted to Serve ROMANS 12: 3 8 10 NOVEMBER 2019 P.M. SERIES: ROMANS: THE ROAD TO RIGHTEOUSNESS
Romans 12: 3 - 5 3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ro 12:3 5). La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation.
Body Life Vv. 3 - 5 The Body is diverse yet a unit. We must have the right opinion of ourselves. Measure of faith? The church like the human body has many members. Not every member has the same function. The Application. V. 5. We are not to think any member more important than the other. We are unified in one body, so we all contribute to the function of the church, the body of Christ.
Romans 12: 6 - 8 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. New American Standard Bible: 1995 update. (1995). (Ro 12:6 8). La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation.
Gifted for Service Vv. 6 8. Gifts given are graced (Grk )to us. IOW, the gifts are graced to us by the Holy Spirit. The point, we must use them by blessing others. Prophecy ( ) Public declaration of God s word. The proportion of faith. Service ( ) in serving. Teaching ( ) in teaching. He who exhorts ( ) to exhort.
Gifted for Service Vv. 6 8. He who gives ( ) with liberality. He who leads ( ) with diligence. He who shows mercy ( ) with cheerfulness ( ). Is this all the gifts? Nowhere in Scripture is there a complete listing. Notice this list lacks sign gifts of 1 Corinthians 12. I believe God grace gifts believers individually so that even those with the same gift are different.
Conclusion God gives every believer Spirit enabled gifts for the purpose of blessing and serving in the church. No gift is more important than another and we must not think more highly of our giftedness over others. At the same time we must not think our gift unimportant and therefore not exercise it. One way to recognize our gift is to realize the open door of service opportunity.
