Digital Transformation [2016] To be reused/tweaked by local champions More and more companies risk extinction as entire industries are disrupted by digital entrants and business models. Music, retailing, media, and travel are far along on this path, but we are also seeing similar patterns in more traditional industries, such as banking, agriculture, energy, health care, industrial goods, and manufacturing. Digital strategy and transformation is therefore often on the agenda of INSEAD alumni who are part of the management team. Companies can t just fiddle at the edges by appointing a chief digital officer or CIO, adopting the latest shiny technologies, or letting a thousand flowers bloom. Yet for management teams it can be difficult at times to sharply detail the case for change and know how to start implementing digital technology. Given the pervasiveness, low cost of entry, and potential impact of digital technology, it s imperative that late adopters act today to launch new digital products and services and digitize internal processes. This means they must implement far more nimble development processes and become far more comfortable making decisions amid uncertainty. Rather than using a top-down, strategy-driven approach, companies need to innovate using build-assess- learn cycles, even when not entirely sure of the outcome. They need to focus on pilot tests and prototypes and need to embrace the concept of fail fast and fail cheap . The INSEAD TMT Network aims to organize a series of digital transformation alumni events, focused on best practices-sharing by experts and group learning & challenging (e.g. breakout, firechat session, panel discussion or other format)
