OVERTURE THEMES 1. Yahweh s authority over nature and events 1:17-2:1 The Creator is mighty and able 1:17Now the LORD had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. Man is created and needy 2:1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the fish. 2. Jonah s distress and its resolution 2:2 2:2 I cried out to the LORD in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and LORD, you heard me! LORD without you I m lost! Help!
FIRST MOVEMENTaTRAUMA and DISTRESS 1.Sinking beneath the surface 2:3-4 He got what he knew he deserved 3You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves. His realisation [2:2a I cried out to the LORD in my great trouble,] 4Then I said, O LORD, you have driven me from your presence. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple. Life without fellowship with the LORD?..........
FIRST MOVEMENTbTRAUMA and DISTRESS 2. Sinking to the bottom 2:5-6b One breath away from forfeiting his life 5 I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head. 6aI sank down to the very roots of the mountains . His realisation [2:2b I called to you from the land of the dead,] 6b I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. - spirit in the netherworld? (Sheol) Death outside of relationship with the LORD?
SECOND MOVEMENT DELIVERANCE Jonah got what he didn t deserve - Mercy 2:6b [ and LORD, you heard me!] 1:17Now the LORD had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah.] 6b But you, O LORD my God, snatched me from the jaws of death! What made the difference? 2:7 7As my life was slipping away, I remembered the LORD. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple. A genuine cry to the LORD for MERCY will be honoured
FINAL MOVEMENT DEDICATION The empty futility of earthly pursuits 8Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God s mercies. The natural response to a saviour - Worship and service 9aBut I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. The singular source of salvation for all mankind 9bFor my salvation comes from the LORD alone. GRACE Jonah gets more than he deserved 2:10 10Then the LORD ordered the fish to spit Jonah out onto the beach. Grace forgives and reinstates ENCORE
Communion For my salvation comes from the LORD alone.
