Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation Main Idea: God s perfect plan of salvation is realized through the Messiah s sacrificial, life-giving work.
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation God s sacrificial, life-giving work included: The Messiah s Exaltation (52:13-14)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation 13) See, my servant will be successful; he will be raised and lifted up and greatly exalted. 14) Just as many were appalled at you his appearance was so disfigured that he did not look like a man, and his form did not resemble a human being - 15) so he will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of him, for they will see what had not been told to them, and they will understand what they had not heard. Isaiah 52:13-15
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation 5) Adopt this same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, 6) who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. 7) Instead, he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, 8) he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross. 9) For this reason, God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10) so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow - in heaven and on earth and under the earth - 11) and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11
Let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up, that to be low is to be high, that the broken heart is the healed heart to bear the cross is to wear the crown. The Valley of Vision (anonymous)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation God s sacrificial, life-giving work included: The Messiah s Exaltation (52:13-14) The Messiah s Rejection (53:1-3)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation 1) Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2) He grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him. 3) He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn t value him. Isaiah 53:1-3
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation God s sacrificial, life-giving work included: The Messiah s Exaltation (52:13-14) The Messiah s Rejection (53:1-3) The Messiah s Suffering (53:4-6)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation 4) Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pain; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5) But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. 6) We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 For the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus Romans 6:23
I like the confession of this text because it is a giving up of all pleas of self-righteousness. It is the declaration of a body of men who are guilty, consciously guilty; guilty with aggravations, guilty without excuse; and here they all stand with their weapons of rebellion broken in pieces. Charles H. Spurgeon
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation God s sacrificial, life-giving work included: The Messiah s Exaltation (52:13-14) The Messiah s Rejection (53:1-3) The Messiah s Suffering (53:4-6) The Messiah s Surrender (53:7-9)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation 7) He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth. 8) He was taken away because of oppression and judgment, and who considered his fate? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people s rebellion. 9) He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully. Isaiah 53:7-9
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends. John 15:5
When we look at the cross we see the justice, love, wisdom and power of God. It is not easy to decide which is most luminously revealed, whether the justice of God in judging sin, or the love of God in bearing the judgment in our place John Stott (The Cross of Christ)
or the wisdom of God in perfectly combining the two, or the power of God in saving those who believe. For the cross is equally an act, and therefore a demonstration, of God s justice, love, wisdom, and power. John Stott (The Cross of Christ)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation God s sacrificial, life-giving work included: The Messiah s Exaltation (52:13-14) The Messiah s Rejection (53:1-3) The Messiah s Suffering (53:4-6) The Messiah s Surrender (53:7-9) The Messiah s Reward (53:10-12)
Gods Perfect Plan of Salvation 10) Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him the guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord s pleasure will be accomplished. 11) After his anguish he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities. 12) Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels. Isaiah 53:10-12
Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and Incarnate Dietrich Bonhoeffer (The Cost of Discipleship)
Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for, the door at which a man must knock. Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is a grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (The Cost of Discipleship)
It is costly because it cost a man his life, and it is a grace because it gives a man the only true life. It is costly because it condemns sin, and a grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because it cost God the life of his Son. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (The Cost of Discipleship)
