To God be the Glory 2 Samuel 7:1-21
GOD VALUES THE SPIRIT OF GIVING MORE THAN THE SIZE OF GIVING
Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, the king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent. 2 Samuel 7:1 2 ESV
And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you. But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, 2 Samuel 7:3 4 ESV
Go and tell my servant David, Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. 2 Samuel 7:5 6 ESV
In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar? 2 Samuel 7:7 ESV
The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart.
In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Psalm 95:4 5 ESV
The point is: What gift can I give to God that is greater than these? What gift can I give to God that is not already His?
GOD VALUES THE STATE OF THE GIVER MORE THAN THE SURPRISE IN GIVING
Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 2 Samuel 7:8 9 ESV
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. 2 Samuel 7:10 11 ESV
The state your heart is in, carries more weight than your support to giving or your expression of support.
The way you honor God with your witness, your words, and your work is proof of your sacrifice.
The Lord had made David king - powerful and successful - for the sake of his people Israel.
Question: Why has God made you a leader, powerful and successful?
Answer: For the sake of His people, His purpose, His will, His children. For His glory and His people s benefit.
For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another. Isaiah 48:11 ESV
I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Isaiah 42:8 ESV
for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:20 ESV
What is glory? Glory is ascribing to God, or recognizing His full splendor, magnificence.
It is the Greek word dxa [1391] - recognize, glory. It is the Hebrew word k [3519] - honor, and majesty. k ,
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 ESV
Worship is not about what you have done for God, what you can do for Him, or what He can do for you, what He can do in you, through you, and with you.
GOD VALUES THE SURRENDER OF THE GIVER MORE THAN THE SACRIFICE OF THE GIVER
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also of your servant s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 2 Samuel 7:18 19 ESV
And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God! Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. 2 Samuel 7:20 21 ESV
Nothing is as precious as sacrificing your heart to God, surrendering your life to Him, and submitting to His lordship.
Davids strength was that he could humble himself before God, friends, and enemies.
When we humble ourselves, God elevates us in the presence of our enemies.
The greatest gift God has given to us is Himself. Consequently, the best gift you can give to God is yourself.
