  1. Gods Love and Justice Lesson 3 To Be Pleasing to God

  2. Memory Text Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. Who will be the recipients of these actions of love and grace? Who are the you/your of this verse? What are the four promises of this verse about how the Lord will treat the redeemed remnant? If Jesus reserves this kind of love and grace for the redeemed remnant, in what sense can we say He loves the wicked whom He destroys?

  3. Overview God takes pleasure in His creation and especially in the creatures He has created in His image. His pleasure in those who respond to His love and grace indicates the great value He places upon us. We can bring Joy to the heart of our Creator and Redeemer and find our highest joy in Him. Picture of a Prodigal Picture of the Father Pleasing God Summary

  4. Picture of a Prodigal Who was listening to the parables Jesus told in Luke 15? (Luke 15:1-3) What was the prodigal saying by requesting his inheritance before the death of his father? What did the Prodigal do with his early inheritance? (Luke 15:13-15) What realization did the prodigal come to as he was feeding the pigs and what plan did he come up with? (Luke 15:17-19)

  5. Picture of the Father How did Jesus describe the father s reaction to the returning son? (Luke 15:20-23) What is the significance of the best robe, the ring, and the sandals? How did the older son feel about the return of the reprobate? (Luke 15:28- 30) What is the father s final plea to the older son? (Luke 15:31-32) What does this parable tell you about God?

  6. Pleasing God What are some texts of Scripture that we can turn to to see what things please God? Rev 4:11 Heb 11:6 Ps 149:4 Ezek 18:32 Ps 147:11 Luke 12:32

  7. Summary God takes pleasure in His creation and especially in the creatures He has created in His image. His pleasure in those who respond to His love and grace indicates the great value He places upon us. Jesus will fulfill Zephaniah s prophecy at His second coming to save His faithful remnant as He rejoices over them with gladness, love, and singing. The Bible is full of inspired writings that indicate the things that God loves and hates, that bring Him pleasure and pain. Chief among those things that bring Him pleasure are those who fear Him, trust in His Son for the forgiveness of their sins, and find eternal life in His kingdom.

  8. Summary The prodigal son is one of Jesus best-loved parables because it paints a beautiful portrait of God s love, grace, compassion, forgiveness, and acceptance. It is the third in a series of parables about things that are lost and the great joy and rejoicing that occurs when they are found. So there is great joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. To some degree, we are all prodigals who have left or are tempted to leave the Father s house. But in the end, we come to realize that the world offers us only husks to fill the god- shaped void in our hearts. In Thy presence is fullness of joy; at Thy right hand are pleasures forevermore.

  9. Summary God is waiting and longing for us to come home to Him. To those who return with sincere repentance and confession of sin, He welcomes with open arms. He does not make us clean up our lives before He accepts us. While we still reek of sin, he wraps us in the robe of Christ s righteousness and adopts us into His family as full sons and daughters. This is a beautiful picture of justification. Will you give all heaven cause to rejoice today by receiving again the love, grace, forgiveness and acceptance of God through faith in Jesus Christ His Son?

  10. Luke 15:1-3 ESV Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them." 3So he told them this parable: [R]

  11. Luke 15:13-15 NIV "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. [R]

  12. Luke 15:17-19 NIV "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.' [R]

  13. Luke 15:20-23 NIV So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' 22"But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. [R]

  14. Luke 15:28-30 NIV "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!' [R]

  15. Luke 15:31-32 NIV " 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. [R]
