Abbott Remains Steadfast on Border Policy Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that migrants detained at the U.S. border with Mexico would be bussed to the steps of the capitol building in Washington. Abbott s move comes in response to the federal government s decision to end Title 42 in May, which permitted authorities to quickly remove migrants and asylum-seekers The governor received bipartisan criticism for his intention, but his office later clarified that the program is voluntary for migrants and would only occur after processing and release by DHS. In response, the White House dismissed Abbott s order as a publicity stunt . Why did the CDC decide to end Title 42? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64MQhhtidn0 2
Abbott Remains Steadfast on Border Policy The top brass from the Texas Military Department were grilled about Operation Lone Star by members of the Texas Senate. Major General Thomas Suelzer told committee members that current funding would dry up on May 1st and that an additional $531 million would be needed to continue operations until the end of the fiscal year. Operation Lone Star has been under increased scrutiny due to reports of low troop morale, pay discrepancies, and for the alleged politicization of the mission. Suelzer told the committee he had ordered an assessment to review pay and morale. How have many troops chosen to express their frustration with Operation Lone Star? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYgoqUgIP4E 3
Background and Key Concepts Governor Abbott launched a border security initiative called Operation Lone Star in March 2021 to combat migrant crossings at the border. Abbott blamed President Biden s immigration policies for the increase in migrant crossings. A disaster declaration in 53 border counties gives Abbott the authority to deploy the National Guard to the border. More than 10,000 troops and DPS officers have been deployed to the border and the price tag has skyrocketed to 2.5 million per week. Operation Lone Star has been under increased scrutiny because of the cost and reports of low troop morale The CDC issued a memorandum signaling an intent to suspend Title 42 on May 23. In anticipation of a migrant surge, Governor Abbott announced a much-criticized plan to bus migrants from the border to Washington D.C. 4
Assessment Writing: Explain why Democratic senators Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema opposed the end of Title 42 so vociferously? Why is it especially important for Mark Kelly to stake out an independent position on immigration even if it defies his own political party? Debate: As commander of chief of the Texas military, should Governor Abbott concern himself more with troop morale or is a successful mission more important? Poll: Do you agree with the decision to end Title 42? Short Answer: Describe how the Department of Homeland Security is planning to respond if there is migrant surge on the border? 5
