Grinnell College, Pre-orientation (bridge) Program An element of an overall Grinnell Science Project that includes substantial curricular and pedagogical changes, student support and a student research emphasis
Grinnell College General Private, selective, residential 185 faculty Grinnell, Iowa (pop. 9,000+) Student Body 1,600 students (1500 on-campus, 100 study abroad) from 50 States traditional and full-time 70% in top 10% HS, Median SAT 1390, ACT 31 27% Domestic Students of Color 17% International
In the late 1980s we began to worry in an organized way about the lack of women and students of color among our science graduates. There is some evidence that some students are more sensitive to problems with the curriculum and pedagogy and that changes will benefit all students.
Data Analysis What correlated with poor grades in introductory math and science: No correlation with standardized exam scores or high school grades Correlation with: First generation college student Graduation from high school with < 50% college goers Being a domestic student of color
Program Elements Pre-orientation Program Students are invited to campus a week prior to New Student Days to participate in a special pre-orientation program.
Pre-orientation program Acclimation Meet and hear perspectives of faculty, staff, and advanced students Strategies for excelling and thriving at Grinnell Learn about campus and available resources
Pre-orientation program Social Learn about life at Grinnell outside academics Meet new friends and develop a supportive cohort
