  1. Conformity in Classrooms BY: NIMO ALI

  2. The tendency to conformity in our society is so strong that reasonably intelligent and well-meaning young people are willing to call white black. This is a matter of concern. It raises questions about our ways of education and about the values that guide our conduct. Solomon Asch

  3. What is Conformity? Conformity is a change in behavior or believe as a result of real or imagined group pressure.

  4. Conformity It is not simply acting like others but you are also being affected by how they act. You consciously act differently from the way you would act alone.

  5. Everyday scenarios #1 A teacher asked a question to the class. You know the answer to the teacher s question but none of your classmates put their hand up to answer. Despite the fact that you know you're right do you give the answer or do you go quiet since none of your classmates are talking?

  6. Scenario #2 You are taking part in a psychology study and you're directed into a room with 10 other participants to fill out a questionnaire. You notice smoke coming out under the door . No one reacts and leaves the room. What would you do?

  7. Ames and Archer (1993). Gardner and Steinberg (2005)

  8. Purpose Examine the effects of conformity on the students confidence levels and Accuracy Hypothesis: In the current study, I hypothesize that students who are in the conformity group will choose the answer with the highest percentage and therefore will conform. The conformity group will have low accuracy rating and high confidence ratings. My second hypothesis is that the students who are in the non- conformity group will have high accuracy and low confidence ratings.

  9. Methods- Participants Students will come to the designated lab and they will be given an informed consent. They will be asked to answer Single factor Between group subjects variable with 2 levels Conformity and non conf.

  10. METHODS-PART Participants will be college level students from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. 18-30 years of age. This study will be between subjects design. Students will sign up to participate in this study. There will be a sign up sheet by the psychology department and the participants will volunteer if they want to take part in this study. Students will be given an informed consent

  11. Methods-Design Single factor between subjects design. 2 levels. Accuracy and confidence levels DV: accuracy and confidence levels.

  12. Methods- Materials When the participants come to the lab, they will be given a form that informs them about the study and the ethics. They will be given the questionnaires and a pen, Only half of the questions will have the misleading questions to decrease the demand characteristics I will be be writing my own questions. There will be 15 basic knowledge trivia questions and the whole study will take 20 minutes.

  13. Methods- Material the conformity group will questions with multiple choice answers but the answers will have a percentage of how many previous participants picked that particular answer

  14. NON-CONFORMITY GROUP 2*3 Conformity group: 2*3 A. 31% answered 5 B. 12% answered 4 C. 25% answered 0 D. 32% answered 6 A. 5 B. 4 C. 0 D. 6

  15. Methods--procedure Participants will be tested individually in a small quiet lab. Participants will come to the designated research lab. They will be given questions and a pen. the researcher will then give instructions. They will be asked to answer each question and rate their confidence level.

  16. Procedure cont. N= 60 The non conformity group will get the same questions as the conformity group with multiple choice but there won t be any percentages in front of the choices to mislead the participants. They will be given the same instructions and lastly, they will be asked to rate their confidence level for each of their answers.

  17. Procedure The same directions will be given to every participant. The researcher will tell the conformity group that there are wrong and right answers and that they should choose which answer they believe is the correct one. Half of the questions for the conformity group will have a high percentage for the correct answer and the other have won t have high percentages for the right answer. Students will be debriefed and thanked for their time. They will be awarded a blue card as extra credit.

  18. Results The results will be discussed as well as any limitations that may have influenced the study. How the current study is related to previous studies will be discussed. I will be using an independent sample t test. The Mean and the Standard deviation for each group will be reported The accuracy of their answers and their confidence levels will be analyzed using the M and SD for each condition--- Results will be display in a table. 2 tests. 1 for each level
