Setting the Scene Read setting the scene on the next slide: Questions: Was there anything confusing in that paragraph? Have you got any clues about whether this is a fiction or information text.

Expert tip: Use text structures features and language. Now skim through the text looking out for features and writing them in your books to help you identify that this is an information text about real events (e.g. headings).
Expert tip: Ask a question Now read page 27 (slide 8). Write down the key details about the accident through answering the questions in your book: What happened? Where did it happen? When did this accident happen? Who was involved? Think of one more question about this text you would like to find out (for example, did they get out?)
Challenge word Now look for todays challenge word (negligence) on page 34 (slide 11). Read the whole sentence and write down in your book what you think it may mean. Now read pages 28-29 (slide 8 and 9) and write the answers to the questions in your book: Looking at page 28, can you find a quote which suggests what it was like in the mine? The text on page 29 does not have a glossary, what else can you use to help you understand what the refuge room is?
Read pages 29-34 (Slides 9-11) (remember to think about the top tips) Can you find an answer to your own question you wrote down earlier? Explain how you discovered your answer.
Questions How did the rescuers know that the miners were still alive? (refer back to page 31 to support answering this question). Write down an explanation of how you have used the expert tips to help you deepen your understanding of what you have read.
Write down your answers in your books: How would you feel if you were one of the trapped miners? The next text is called Try Basketball! - Do you think it will be an information or a story? We will reveal the answer next week.
Advice/Guidance for Guided Reading Work In addition to this work, you can read an entire book on Fiction Express and answer the quiz questions. Teachers will be mentioning the fantastic readers who manage this. Clouds- Read Runaway Dog Disaster and answer the quiz questions. Moons- Read The River Prince! this week and answer the quiz questions. Stars- Read The Mystery Box this week and answer the quiz questions. All teachers are regularly looking at the website and we would love to be able to mention as many children as possible.

(The roof caved in) Where did it happen?(A mine In Chile) When did this accident happen? (5th August 2010) Who was involved? (Thirty-three men) Think of one more question about this text you would like to find out (for example, did they get out?)
Challenge word Now look for todays challenge word (negligence) on page 34 (slide 11). Read the whole sentence and write down in your book what you think it may mean. (Negligence is a noun that means a failure to take proper care of something or someone ) Now read pages 28-29 (slide 8 and 9) and write the answers to the questions in your book: Looking at page 28, can you find a quote which suggests what it was like in the mine? (I have spotted in the information box at the bottom of page 28 that tells me it was 33 degrees, which is a very hot temperature) The text on page 29 does not have a glossary, what else can you use to help you understand what the refuge room is? (I can see an information box on this page which has additional information)

The 33 of us. to a drill bit Write down an explanation of how you have used the expert tips to help you deepen your understanding of what you have read. Example- I have read and visualised the mine to further understand how difficult it would be being stuck in the mine in such difficult circumstances.
