NAMMCO/28/11 BYCELS - item 8.1 Report of the BYCELS Working Group BYCELS spent a considerable amount of time on identifying and standardising relevant data to inform its work, annual reporting from member countries now encompasses data on by-catch, entanglement and standings. Member countries have submitted their 2019 and 2020 data accordingly. Review of the submitted data from member countries for 2019 and 2020. Can be used as a basis of revision of data collection What information in useful to collect ? What information is realistic to collect ? NAMMCO Annual Meeting 28 22 25 March 2021

The IWC has worked extensively with entanglement response and has developed Principles and guidelines for large whale entanglement response efforts that is available online. BYCELS agreed that there was no need develop NAMMCO guidelines for whale entanglement. NAMMCO Annual Meeting 28 22 25 March 2021

NAMMCO/28/11 BYCELS - item 8.2 Adoption of priorities and work plan 2021- 2022 BYCELS discussed the possibility of developing interactive maps depicting the reported data on by-catch, entanglement and strandings. To be discussed in the working group. In the Terms of reference for BYCELS: The Working Group shall upon request from the Council or individual member countries, provide advice on welfare issues related to by-catch, entanglement, and live strandings, affecting marine mammals.
