BACKGROUND.. Dermatologist accounts for almost 5% antibiotic prescription worldwide and most of the conditions require prolonged treatment [1,2]. The research by Swati et al. revealed the percentage of use of antibiotics in the Department of Dermatology. Majority of the antibiotics was prescribed for the indications such as Steroid induced rosacea and acne vulgaris.Cefadroxil,Fusidic acid are commonly prescribed antibiotics[3]. 4
AIM: To study the drug usage pattern of antibiotics among patients in the department of DVL in a Tertiary care hospital, Government Medical College, Tiruppur. OBJECTIVES: 1.To study about the skin disorders in patients with antibiotics prescription. 2.To study the antibiotics that are prescribed for wide variety of skin disorders. 3.To study the drug-drug interactions in the prescription
STUDY DESIGN: Consulting the topic with hospital and academic guide. Approval from hospital ethical authorities Preparation of study protocol Collection and review of literature. Selection of patients with inclusion and exclusion criteria Obtaining data from the patients Compilation of the collected data Evaluation using statistical tools. Discussion and conclusion of the study Submission of the reports 9
METHODOLOGY Study population: Study method: In-patients and out-patients in DVL department,Government medical college hospital,Tiruppur A cross-sectional observational study Sample size: Study duration: 200 patients 6 Months
STUDY CRITERIA: INCLUSION CRITERIA: 1)Patients with infectious skin diseases. 2)Patients with non-infectious inflammatory disorders. 3)Both in-patients and out-patients 4)Patients of all age groups such as pediatrics, adults and geriatrics. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: Patients with auto immune skin disorders 11
PROCEDURE: After the approval from the authorities, the relevant data are collected from the patients with their consent. The collection of relevant data includes 1. Details of the patients, 2. Laboratory investigations (if any), 3. Diagnosis , 4. Antibiotic and non-antibiotic medications in the prescription 5. Discharge summary (in-patients) 12
PURPOSE: By this study the following benefits can be obtained such as, 1. The most commonly reported infectious skin disease can be known (during the study period). 2. The frequently prescribed antibiotics can be studied. 13
