He who Speaks in a Tongue 1 Corinthians 14:1-12
Chapter Content Chapters 12, 13, and 14 are a unit that deals with the matter of spiritual gifts. In chapter 12, the apostle Paul instructed the brethren on how they were not to be envious of another s spiritual gift(s). In chapter 13, he shows them a more excellent way to deal with church problems -- in love. In chapter 14, he gets back to the matter of specifically addressing the miraculous gifts again.
1 Corinthians 14:1-12 Prophecy should be desired more than speaking in tongues (Verses 1-5). If one speaks in tongues but is not understood, his efforts are of no profit (Verses 6-12).
What is commonly called tongue speaking today The gift of tongue-speaking (according to the Bible) was the supernatural gift of being able to speak in a human language which one had not learned. Why do Pentecostals and Charismatics hire a translator when going into foreign lands today? Frenzied or over-joyed gibberish is spoken among religious groups who do not even profess Jesus as the Christ. Even among those who do profess Jesus as the Christ and claim to possess this miraculous gift, there is division over who can and cannot speak tongues.
If truly led by the Holy Spirit, why are these principles not obeyed today? Acts 2: 6, 8, 11) Do all speak in a known language of the world today? 1 Corinthians 14:5) Do those who profess to speak in tongues all desire rather to prophesy? 1 Corinthians 14:19) Do all desire rather to speak five words with understanding; or do all desire the gift of speaking in some sort of unknown language?
If truly led by the Holy Spirit, why are these principles not obeyed today? 1 Corinthians 14:22) Are tongues used as a sign to unbelievers and not to believers? 1 Corinthians 14:27) Do more than three speak in tongues at an assembly? 1 Corinthians 14:28) Do all speak in tongues only if an interpreter is present? 1 Corinthians 14:34) Do the women keep silent in an assembly, or are women permitted to speak out?
Conclusion The Bible principles not being obeyed by modern men prove that they are not being led by the Holy Spirit in what they are claiming to do. Speaking un-intelligle syllables strung together is a learned behavior and the result of an emotional experience. The apostle Paul explained the supreme value of prophecy over tongues by contrasting the two gifts. Prophecy was not the same as our modern-day preaching, because today s preachers study the Bible and prepare their messages. Learning God s will for us today is the key to serving Him acceptably.
