Significance of the title: - The story happens during Christmas or Thanksgiving time, with difficulties arise while cooking turkey in the kitchen. Setting: - Physical : In Dave and Morley s house during Christmas time - Emotional: Humorous Main Character: - Protagonist: Dave Round character - Antagonist: Dave himself - Dynamic: Dave s wife Morley - Stock: The turkey 2
Plot - Dave must roasted the turkey in time for Christmas dinner before Morley and kids came back from the food bank. However he doesn t know how to use the oven. - Dave thought of asking the hotel chef to help cook the turkey, and he returned home with the roasted turkey. Introduction: - Christmas is approaching, Dave and Morley have a dispute over Christmas. Because Dave does nothing for the Christmas Initiating incident: -Morley decide to join in the neighbourhood Christmas Club to prepare for the Christmas and complaining that she was a train and Dave was the one who drank in that train.(Dave is lazy) Climax: - In order not to make his wife doubt, he also specially forged the scene when he roasted turkey, which he makes the gravy on the light bulb. Falling Action: - Then he met the guy Jim Scoffield who met in front of the hotel and his mother and Morley went home together. Rising Action: - Dave wants to make his wife a happy Christmas, so he promising his beloved wife Morley that he will take care of the Christmas turkey while she takes the kids to work at the food bank. - From the start, Dave faces problems from realizing at midnight that he forgot to buy the turkey. - Dave gets an unappetizing, frozen, and slightly scarred bird home. Conclusion: - He finally decide to tell Morley the truth because there is gravy dripping on Jim s head. And the story is not completely finish. So is Unresolved conclusion. 3
Irony: - Dramatic irony: The title Dave cooks the turkey - Verbal irony: Dave tells Morley he have already put the Turkey out of the freezer, however he didn t, he even didn t buy the turkey yet. Foreshadowing: - Title Dave cooks the turkey , show that the story is about Dave have trouble on cooking the turkey during Christmas or maybe Thanksgiving. - He wasn t about to admit that. He wasn t about tell Morley he couldn t hold up his end of a bargain. So Dave lay in bed, his eyes closed, his body rigid, the minutes of the night dragging by as the motored his wife s breathing. Which shows that he will have the trouble in the following step of cooking turkey. Genre: - Escape 4
Symbol: Universal Symbol: Turkey- Christmas or Thanksgiving. Moreover Dave's concern for Morley. He wants to do something to make his wife happy and also he wants to keep his promise. Personal Symbol: Train- Morley is hardworking like a train to take care of the whole family. Moral: You need to pay attention for the family so that the family knows what you know about the family Theme: Understand your family member form pay attention to what they need and really do something to show that you are care for this family. 5
