  1. What is a hero? How can I be a hero? What is special about heroes? Can anyone be a hero? Draw your idea of what a hero looks like.

  2. On the next slides you will find some resources/pictures/clues about the next local hero we are going to look at. Before you go any further, see if you can use the resources to guess who this hero is and why they might be a hero.

  3. What does the map show? Who might this lady be? How might Liverpool Football Club be involved? What has this lady done to be a hero? An adult in your household might be able to help.

  4. Do you know anything already about the Hillsborough disaster? Make a note of anything you already know.

  5. At a football match between Liverpool and Nottingham forest, 96 Liverpool fans sadly died because there were too many people in the stand. The disaster happened on the 15thof April 1989. It happened in the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. The police let too many people into the stands but it was decided that all of the deaths were accidental. The families of those who had died did not agree with this.

  6. Why do you think the families disagreed with this decision? What might an activist or a campaigner be? Think back to our hero how might she be involved? How do you think she helped?

  7. Annes son, Kevin, sadly died during the disaster. This motivated her to campaign for the cause of the disaster to be looked at again. She didn t believe that it was an accident and felt that more people could have been saved if the emergency services had acted quicker. She said she would never give up.

  8. Anne spoke to witnesses from the football match that day to gain a better understanding of what happened. Anne was turned down multiple times when she asked for the case to be considered again. But then on the 12thof September 2012, it was ruled that the disaster was as a result of a lack of police control and that more people could have been saved if the emergency response teams had been more responsive.

  9. Look at the picture you drew earlier of a hero. Does this match what Anne Williams looked like? What does this tell us? What characteristics did Anne show? Do you think Anne is a local hero? What makes Anne heroic? What is a witness? What did Anne speak to witnesses? Why do you think she didn t just give up when she was turned down so many times?
