Pointers For Students Applying to High Schools Outside of Fort Lee Visit the school s website to learn about admission requirements, programs, application process and deadlines. Attend the school s Open House Complete and submit the application by the deadline. Each school sets their own deadlines. Mark your calendars. It is the family s responsibility to submit the application on time. Parents/guardians should complete the Transcript Release Form/Records Release Form and submit it to Ms. Brigida. This form may be emailed to dbrigida@flboe.com or dropped off at the school at least two weeks in advance. We encourage students, not parents/guardians to speak directly to the teachers about letters of recommendations. Remember , saying Thank you and please go a long way.

Frequently Asked Questions 1. No. However, if you are interested in any of the academies: Academy of Finance, Academy of Theatre Arts, or the Pre IB Programme, then yes, you will need to complete an application. Do I need to complete an application to attend FLHS 2. May I apply for more than one academy of FLHS? Yes. If you apply to more than one academy and get accepted into them, you may have to make a choice. Due to scheduling requirements, you will not be able to complete all three academies. These are possible options: One academy only or PRE IB & ATA (will work together ) 3. Do I have to apply to one of the academies at FLHS? No. AOF, ATA, and PRE IB, are small learning communities which are optional for students. While they are unique and offer a specialized focused, they may not be of interest to all students. 4. Will I still get a good education and have a chance to be accepted into college if I don t participate in one of the academies at FLHS? Yes, FLHS offers a wide selection of AP (Advanced Placement) courses, Honors courses, and College Prep courses.( Student must meet criteria to be placed in AP, IB, and Honors courses.) Your options will be discussed each year with your counselor.
Frequently Asked Questions Contd 5. How will I know if an academy or other school is right for me? While each academy/school offers a rewarding learning experience, you should personally, have great interest in the academy and/or school you are applying to. The program offerings, educational opportunities, and teachers should get you excited about wanted to be apart of the academy/school. 6. When will interviews take place for AOF, ATA, or PRE IB at FLHS? Interviews will take place virtually. AOF interviews will be on Dec. 8th. (Dec. 11th if need be) . ATA interviews will be on Dec. 14th PRE IB interviews will be on Dec. 17th The Faculty Coordinator will email each student specific details about the interviews about a week before. Students should remember to check their email account daily. 7. How do I get my school transcript sent to the high school I m applying to? Parents/guardians should complete the Transcript Release Form/Records Release Form and submit it to Ms. Brigida. This form may be emailed to dbrigida@flboe.com at least two weeks in advance. Once we are in school, students may stop by the Guidance Office to drop off the form.
Frequently Asked Questions Contd 8. When will my admission test and interview take place with Academies @ Englewood or Bergen Academies? The school you applied to will provide you with information regarding your admission test and interview. 9. When are applications due for the FLHS Academies? Applications for the three academies at FLHS are due Monday, Nov. 23rd. If you are applying to a school outside of FL, please check their website for the application deadline. It is the responsibility of the student/family to submit the application on time. Mark your calendars. We recommend that you do not wait until the last day to submit your application. 10. How should I dress for an interview? Remember you want to make a good first impression even during a virtual meeting. A clean and neat appearance is important. Suggested but not mandatory: button down or collared shirt, tie, pants, dress, skirt, blouse, suit, and clean shoes. 11. How will I know if I got accepted into an academy at FLHS? A letter will be mailed home in early January.
Frequently Asked Questions Contd 12. What questions will be asked during AOF, ATA, and PRE IB interviews? For AOF and PRE IB, students should be prepared to discuss their application responses, why they want to be in the academy, and describe themselves as a student/personally. ATA applicants should review the application for details outlining how to prepare for the interview. 13. How will my teacher know I need a letter of recommendation? It is recommended that students, not parents/guardians speak directly to the teacher (at least two weeks in advance) to request a letter of recommendation. Please let them know which school/academy you are applying to. 14 Where do I find my NJ SMART CODE ? To find the NJ Smart Code (aka State ID number) please look in Genesis. Student Data tab > Summary tab > State ID not Student ID. 15. Will students still meet with Ms. Brigida to discuss course options at FLHS, even if they applied to another school? Yes, we prepare all 8th graders as if they are going to FLHS. In May, we will ask the students which school they plan on attending. If they decide to attend another high school, we will delete the FLHS schedule.
