Graduation Requirements 2019-2020 School Year Due to the mandated school closures, students met the testing requirement in each tested area by passing the course by the end of the 2019-2020 school year or in any school year prior. This includes students who passed Algebra 1 in middle school. 3
Graduation Requirements 2018/21 Cohort (current 12th grade) 2019/22 Cohort (current 11th grade) Participate in Assessment (prior to 2016 2017) Pass MCAP (725) Combined Score on MCAP Algebra and English (1450+) Bridge Plan Students who graduate in 2021 and did not meet the testing requirement prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year must pass the course and take the test to meet the requirement. Participate in Assessment (prior to 2016 2017) Pass MCAP (725) Pass Algebra 1 course prior to 2020-2021 Pass Algebra 1 course and take the assessment in Combined Score on MCAP Algebra and English (1450+) Bridge Plan the testing requirement prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year must pass the course and take the test to meet the requirement. Approved Substitute Assessments Currently, MSDE allows the following approved assessments as substitution for specific High School testing requirements. MARYLAND TESTING REQUIREMENT AP EXAM (score of 3, 4, or 5) IB EXAM (score of 5, 6, or 7) Calculus AB Calculus BC Statistics Mathematics Studies SL Mathematics SL Mathematics HL Algebra 1 English Language English Literature English A1 English 10 Biology Biology SL Biology HL Science United States Government and Policies Government 6
Next Steps At the January SBOE meeting, the SBOE voted to accept the recommendations of the Graduation Task Force. This will shift the purpose of the high school assessments from a graduation requirement to an end-of-course assessment that will be 20 percent of a student s final course grade. This shift will take a lot of planning and implementation at the state level. There are a lot of unknowns at this point. What we know now includes: MSDE is making changes to the graduation and testing language in COMAR. Those changes will be released for public comment for 30 days once completed. We will share with schools when public comment opens. The proposed shift will not occur until the 2022-2023 school year. MSDE will be convening a workgroup to inform decisions and ensure a smooth transition. 7
