what happened in 2022/23? 3% for pay point 20 and up 9%-3.1% for pay point 3 to 19 online consultation 83% reject dispute meetings - no increase disaggregate ballots and re-ballots achieved strike mandate in 25 branches
2022-23 successes Non-consolidated payments to staff in more than 30 HEIs Offers on terms and conditions University of Glasgow review of grading structure Deals on review of grading structure at Edinburgh Napier and Bath Spa Universities UCEA responded to our strike action by offering to start negotiations over a pay offer for 2023-24 early and pay part of that increase early
pay negotiations 2023-24 UNISON claim consolidated flat rate increase of 4K for all joint claim of all TUs 4k or RPI + 2%, whichever greater equivalent increase on London Weighting 11 January received first offer of 4-7% 26 January received final offer of 5-8% increase with part to be paid in February 2023 second offer added 140m to pay bill, all for those who earn more than 52K No flat rate offer so compounds issues with compression at bottom of pay spine
23-24 pay offer consultation Online member consultation ran from 26 Jan - 9 Feb Result was 82% reject vote on 34.3% turnout SGE decided to go into dispute Results widely variable between branches HE SGE went into dispute with UCEA over 23-24 pay
23-24 dispute resolution process Conciliation offered by ACAS 17 February joint statement impasse and dispute resolution process exhausted on pay Strikes were paused for a two week period of calm alongside further negotiations around pay-related matters 15 March joint statement terms of reference developed for detailed negotiations on review of the UK HE pay spine equality pay gaps. workload contract types
next steps Branches with strike mandates further dates for action Arts University Bournemouth on 25 April Strike ballot in14 HEIs in England for impactful strike action from 1 June during administration of exams/ assessments. England only due to different term and exam dates track record of winning Followed by ballot of 28 HEIs across UK for strike action together from start of Autumn term SGE strategy - gradually build effective strike action across UK through disaggregate balloting where we can win, and provide support to develop organisation and power to win in other HEIs.
Why vote for action? not a fair offer way below inflation and in real terms it s a pay cut cost of living is still at a 40-year high HE staff work incredibly hard, many are low paid, we need a pay rise standing together will send a strong message to university employers that they need to think again
