SCHEV 101 & Transition in Virginia AHEAD Fall Conference Sarahbeth Dreis
The Basics To fulfill our mission, SCHEV makes higher education public policy recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly in such areas as capital and operating budget planning, enrollment projections, institutional technology needs, and student financial aid. SCHEV administers a variety of educational programs that benefit students, faculty, parents, and taxpayers. SCHEV serves as a catalyst to promote greater access, quality, affordability, and accountability throughout the system. SCHEV also helps policymakers, college administrators, and other concerned leaders work cooperatively and constructively to advance educational excellence. The Basics (continued) Established in 1956 Coordinating body for the colleges in Virginia Approve new academic programs and institutions, state-wide strategic planning, Board of Visitors training, financial aid planning and policy, grant administration, increasing postsecondary access to Virginia students and other initiatives Level Up and GEAR UP Virginia V-TOP: Virginia Talent and Opportunity Partnership Fund for Excellence and Innovation 2
The Council The Council sets the agenda and priorities for the year. The SCHEV staff handles those priorities and executes the initiatives from Council and the General Assembly (such as study bills). Designing Your Own Campus Visit Determine if this is a possibility for your office to take on and who you may be able to partner with the share the load Identify partners for funding: Middle School Campus visit project through SCHEV VCAC GEAR UP Identify the school division(s) you want to target. Hint: more statewide funding available for school divisions that 50% free and reduced price lunch. Identify the transition coordinator from a local division s website. Determine the date ranges and times Determine how large of an event: how many schools, how many students, will it include families or parents, will it include school staff 11
Campus Visit Planning Timeline February 2024 Identified colleges of interest Set up planning meetings to propose the idea March 2024 Initial planning meetings to determine the feasibility and set the dates for the college visits April 2024-present Ongoing planning meetings to determine: the specific activities including a tour, the stakeholders at the college, lunch through the dining halls, and anything else that the college wants to highlight specific to them 12
