What is it? Velcro
Why was it needed? Originally envisioned as a fastener for clothing Now, velcro is used in many different ways (expatiation)
When did it come about? 1948-1952: idea was sparked and design was configured 1952: actual product released in Switzerland 1955: patent received by Swiss government Velcro starts getting mass produced Plants opened in Europe and product expands to USA and Canada 1957: Velcro USA plant opened in New Hampshire Still there today Liquid Networks
How did it come about? A man was hunting in the Jura mountains in 1948 He noticed that cockleburs were attached to his pants and his dog s fur and wondered why Using a microscope, he observed the hooks of the cockleburs attached to the loops of the fabric of his pants Using this idea, he created the hook and loop technology used in velcro (Adjacent Possible) He took out a loan and started mass-producing the product
