  2. In 1876, the Rhode Island Womens Centennial Commission raised over $10,00 for Rhode Island s exhibition at the Centennial Exposition, the first official World s Fair, hosted in Philadelphia. THE COLLEGE S ORIGINS Committee chair Helen Metcalfe proposed that $1,675 left from the group s fundraising be used as seed money for a school of design in Providence to support Rhode Island s burgeoning industries.   3. The Rhode Island General Assembly ratified the incorporation of the Rhode Island School of Design, now commonly referred to as RISD (pronounced RIZ-dee), on March 5, 1877. RISD AND THE RISD MUSEUM True to bylaws indicating that art was to be integral to the institution s instruction, both the college and an affiliated art museum opened in 1878(Bronson, 1932).

  4. The Rhode Island School of Design was supported by the President of Brown University (Woodward, 1985). RISDs current stated mission, through its college and museum, is to educate its students and the public in the creation and appreciation of works of art and design, to discover and transmit knowledge and to make lasting contributions to a global society through critical thinking, scholarship and innovation.
