  1. The Hollywood sign By: Nick Crawford and Mason Bronger

  2. Story behind the hollywood sign The original hollywood sign was built in 1923 and belonged to a real estate group called Hollywoodland . From 1923-1931 the sign became a tourist attraction and endures and becomes a glamorous symbol for hollywood In the mid 1940 s the sign began to fall apart to where the neighborhood wanted the sign to be removed. The developers then began to sell their last 450 acres of land (which included the sign) and turn it over to the city of Los Angeles to make it a part of of griffin park.

  3. Story behind the hollywood sign In 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce enters a contract with the City of Los Angeles parks and recreation to repair and rebuild the sign. They also removed the Land off of the sign to spell hollywood. The sign got a complete makeover but required constant repairs for over the next 30 years. In 1973 Gloria Swanson sponsored another complete makeover of the sign and declared it as a historical landmark by the city's Cultural Heritage board. In 1978 (5 years after the second makeover) Termites infested the O and it fell down the mountain. Also arsonists set fire to the bottom of of the L . This is when the city decides to fully rebuild the sign which cost them 250,000$ which was ten times the cost of the original.

  4. Story behind the hollywood sign Also in 1978 celebrities sponsored the sign by throwing fundraising parties and buying a letter on the sign. The old sign is demolished for the first time in over 50 years. Workers poured over 194 tons of concrete to support the sign. To get the letters in place helicopters had the drop the giant steel frames in place. In November 1978 the new sign stands four stories high, 450 feet long and weighing 480,000 pounds. In 2000 the city of Los Angeles lights up the sign on New Year's Eve to celebrate going into the 21st century.

  5. Why we chose this project Nick- I wanted to do this project because I ve always wanted to go to Los Angeles and see the sign in person. I also thought it was interesting that they were able to support 4 story letters without them falling off. Mason- i wanted to do this project because i have family that lives in la and i've always dreamed to be able to live in the hills with all my favorite stars.
