  2. Horatio Nelson 1758-1805 British flag officer in the Royal Navy The most famous admiral of the Napoleonic War National hero

Early life He was born on 29 September 1758 in a rectory in Norfolk, England His parents were reverend Edmund Nelson and his wife Catherine Suckling His naval career began when he was just twelve years old when his uncle Maurice Suckling took him to sea When he was twenty, he was appointed a captain and began officer training Edmund Nelson Catherine Suckling

Naval career In 1793 the war with revolutionary France broke out In 1797 he defeated the French- Spanish fleet in the Battle of the Cape Saint Vincent Then he took a part in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and one year later he destroyed the French fleet at Abukir In 1801, a truce agreement was signed in Amiens Nelson returned to London to be sent to Balt, where he defeated the Danish fleet in Copenhagen in 1801

Trafalgar In 1805, during the threat of the Napoleonic invasion of England, he was called to become the head of the British Navy On 21 October 1805, at the Battle of Trafalgar, the French-Spanish fleet was destroyed He himself was mortally wounded in the battle With his victory he saved the British from the invasion of Napoleon

  6. Funeral His body was put in a barrel with brandy to withstand the return to his homeland He was placed in the sarcophagus in St. Paul's Cathedral in London The square in front of the Ministry of Naval Forces was named Trafalgar square, where Nelson's Column was erected
