Purpose of the Board O.C.G.A. 49-10-2 - The purpose of the Board shall be to address the health care workforce needs of Georgia communities through the support and development of medical education programs and to increase the number of physicians and health care practitioners practicing in underserved rural areas. 2

  3. Board Members & Staff There are 15 Board members 5 Primary Care Physicians 5 Non-Primary Care Physicians 3 Hospital Representatives 2 Consumer Members Of the 15 members, eight members must be from rural areas Six-member staff 3

  12. Who qualifies for loan repayment? Service-cancelable loan repayment programs are for physicians, dentists, physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses The programs assist in paying debt incurred for tuition, fees and other expenses associated with the completion of the aforementioned degrees for practitioners who agree to practice full-time in an underserved, rural county in Georgia with a population of 35,000 or less 12

  15. Why is the Boards Work Important? 15

  16. Aging Workforce Georgia s physician workforce is rapidly aging. In the 2015 survey, 58.7% of the physician workforce is age 50 and above, and of that percentage, 20.1% reported they be retiring in the next five years. 21.2% of the physicians retiring in the age group of 50 and above are practicing in rural counties. 41.3% of the physician workforce is age 49 and below, and 0.5% reported they will retire in the next five years. 16

Policy proposals Increase the number of recipients for the GBPW s loan repayment programs Create pipeline programs to connect rural middle- and high-schoolers with medical schools and the medical profession (Medical Schools/AHEC) Expand the amount of slots at current GME programs Develop new GME programs 23

Community Involvement Academic mentoring and guidance of middle/high school students interested in healthcare fields Partner with medical/nursing/PA schools to expose students to health education Work with community leaders from various institutions (i.e. churches, hospitals, schools, banks) to build an infrastructure around new physicians Work with local industries to ensure they are aware of physicians in their communities that they can add to their health plans 24
