Household Hunger Scale (HHS) is a valuable tool developed by FANTA to assess food deprivation in households. It helps distinguish between different levels of food insecurity and is widely used in food security surveys. Learn about its construction, data analysis, strengths, limitations, and linkages with IPC phases in this comprehensive guide.

  1. Household Hunger Scale HHS was developed by FANTA Commonly collected food consumption indicator, included in many regular food security surveys.

  2. HHS - construct HHS is a household food deprivation scale, i.e. it informs on lack of food food quantity indicator Validated for cross- cultural use Based on three questions asking about household experiences and their frequency over the past 30 days 3

  3. HHS - construct HHS module: 4

  4. HHS - construct Household answers are recorded based on frequency (rarely = 1, sometimes = 2 and often = 3) Data analysis: Recoding of answers for the three questions: no = 0, rarely and sometimes = 1, often = 2 Answers are summed up: score can range from 0 to 6 5

  5. Linkages between HHS and IPC Phases Good indicator for assessing severe food insecurity: a separate cut-off for IPC Phase 5 exists 6

  6. HHS - strengths Often available, widely used Easy and quick to collect Able to distinguish between IPC Phases 3, 4 and 5 useful for understanding the extent of food deprivation

  7. HHS - limitations Works best in severe food insecurity situations, not in areas with low food insecurity Often does not converge with indicators measuring food consumption (FCS and HDDS)

  8. HHS - quiz Statement T F 1 Due to the focus on the more severe food insecure behaviors, HHS is only useful in contexts with severe food insecurity. X 2 In the IPC reference table, the HHS has specific cut-offs to distinguish phase 4 from phase 5. X 3 HHS does not quantify food consumption or assess quality of diet. X 4 HHS requires that respondents complete very long questionnaires. X 5 HHS, as well as FCS, are experience-based. X
