MOTIVATION Motivation is what causes people to act or do something in a positive way Motivation is what causes people to act or do something in a positive way Intrinsic motivation Intrinsic motivation: Come from inside, and is associated with higher level needs. Intrinsic motivation - Doing something that you feel is important eg. work you take pride in or feel it helps others Extrinsic motivation Extrinsic motivation : Reward = positive extrinsic motivation Punishment = Negative extrinsic motivation By satisfying the top levels of Maslow s hierarchy of needs, it can ensure that employees are more motivated and loyal to the company. 3

  3. HERTZBERGS TWO FACTOR THEORY Frederick Herzberg developed the model in 1959. He did this by interviewing over 200 professionals. The interviews delved/looked into when the interviewees were at their most and least happiest with their jobs. Herzberg s Motivation Theory model, or Two Factor Theory, argues that there are two factors that an organization can adjust to influence motivation in the workplace. These factors are: Motivators Motivators: Which can encourage employees to work harder. Hygiene factors Hygiene factors: These won t encourage employees to work harder but they will cause them to become demotivated if they are not present. JOB DESIGN Job design Job design is a systematic approach to creating jobs and add value to the organization jobs that are both motivating for employees What kind of jobs are most interesting to you? Think of a job that you know something about (E.g. a job done by you or your family) or are interested in. How could you design the job to improve motivation of the job holder? For example, if an employee normally assembles parts, the job may be enlarged to include new tasks such as work planning, inspection / quality control, or maintenance. Alternatively, the tasks may include working in the same department, but changing tasks every hour. 5

  8. ACTIVITY Hairdressers top job satisfaction poll Have you noticed__________ that every time you go for a perm or a trim the hairdresser is always very chatty? The reason they are so happy is that most of them __________ their jobs. This is according to a survey conducted by the City & Guilds of London Institute, which asked 1,200 workers about their job __________. Forty per cent of hairdressers are very happy in their jobs, while civil servants, social workers and architects are the unhappiest workers.
