I can Statement I can identify the figures of speech in a sentence and use them in writing open sentences. CCSS within this Lesson L.4.5 Language: Vocabulary Acquisition & Use Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. L.4.5a Language: Vocabulary Acquisition & Use Explain the meaning of simple similes and metaphors (e.g., as pretty as a picture) in context. RF.4.4a Reading: Foundational Skills-Fluency Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding. AASL within this Lesson AASL.I.A.2 Inquire: Recalling prior and background knowledge as context for new meaning. AASL.I.B.2 Inquire: Devising and implementing a plan to fill knowledge gaps. AASL.II.C.2 Include: Contributing to discussions in which multiple viewpoints on a topic are expressed. AASL.I.C.4 Inquire: Sharing products with an authentic audience. AASL.V.D.1 Explore: Iteratively responding to challenges. PROCEDURE 1. Write the similarities of the two objects in each item. 2. Read the lines taken from different literary texts. Then identify the two things being compared and determine the figure of speech (simile or metaphor) used. 3. Form a group with five members. Compare each member to a person, an animal, or an object. Use a simile or metaphor in writing a sentence for each comparison. Don t forget to indicate the figure of speech used. 4. Share your output with the group. You may ask for and give corrections and/or feedback about the sentence or the figure of speech used. 5. Think of your family member s characteristics and compare each to an object or an animal. Write a sentence about it using the figures of speech discussed. Underline the two ideas being compared and indicate the figure of speech used. ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT Activity 1: Think: Comparing the two objects to check the similarities Activity 2: Create: Identifying the figure of speech used in each sentence Activity 3: Share: Comparing a group member to a person, an animal, or an object using the figures of speech discussed Activity 4: Share: Sharing the output with the group Activity 5: Grow: Writing a sentence that compares two objects using the figures of speech discussed ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Texts and photos are not created or maintained by Elementary Librarian.
