Make Your Home Secure Monday, July 11 OHCE Annual Meeting Learning Session 1 Gina Peek, PhD
Lesson description Take a good look around your home and improve security. Learn simple ways to make your home more secure.
Objectives After completing the program, participants should understand: Connection between the home environment and health, welfare, and safety Simple low and no-cost actions that families can take to secure home and improve health, welfare, and safety

Set some rules and talk to family members. Just some rules might include: Lock the doors and windows Close the garage door Don t open the door to uninvited people Out in the yard? Secure your home 1. Hold a household meeting
See if your local police department will offer a complimentary walk though to recommend ways to improve security 2. Call the police
With a trusted friend or family member: Set a timer for three minutes Friend acts as a burglar and finds as many small valuables as possible As a result of the exercise, you hide the valuables Return the favor for your neighbor 3. Organize a burglary
4. Remove the hidden housekey Everyone knows about the key hidden under the mat, in the mailbox, or in the flowerpot Give your key to a neighbor or friend Tip from AARP: consider a keyless entry
5. Place keys and remotes in a smart Don t store your keys or garage door openers in places that are visible inside your house. Put them in a cabinet/drawer to hide them. spot

7. Lock up the ladder Don t store your ladder outside Burglar could use it to climb to second story or balcony
If you do have outdoor lighting, check the bulbs to make sure that they are not burned out. When buying bulbs, make sure that they are for outdoor use. If you don t have any or enough outdoor lighting, install motion sensors near each point of entry (cost) 8. Light up the outdoors
9. Install timers Create a someone s at home look with timers on lights, TVs, radio
10. Secure AC units Got a window air conditioner? Use an air conditioner bracket, sliding window lock, or corner braces.
11. Trim and prune plantings (anything that is too tall, bushy, dense, etc.) Make sure that your house is visible from the street Eliminate hiding spots
Do your windows actually lock? Are the locks operable? Consider purchasing a window lock that lets you open the window a few inches 12. Check windows
Replace hollow core (easy to breach) with solid core (made of wood or metal) Check your sliding glass door: add a metal or wooden bar to secure Treat the garage door as if it is the front door: keep it closed 13. Assess doors
Locks are the weakest point on the door. Make sure doors are secured by grade 1 or 2 deadbolt 14. Replace weak locks

A few more tips: AARP Away on vacation? Posting pics on social media lets everyone know that you are away. Buy something big? Don t put TV or computer packing on the curb for everyone to see.
