American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) founded in 1884, Life Members grade initiated with Founding Members like Thomas Edison. IEEE Foundation, a philanthropic partner established in 1973, administers the Life Member Fund. The IEEE Life Members Committee (LMC) manages activities for retired members to stay active and involved, supporting meaningful programs and encouraging the formation of Life Member Affinity Groups (LMAG).

History of Life Member Organization American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) was founded on May 13, 1884. Life Members Grade started in 1884 with the Founding Members - We have had Life Members for 140-years. Some Founding Life Members - Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) wasfounded on May 13, 1912. Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) formed from merger of AIEE and IRE on January 1, 1963. Life Member Fund was Created with the Merger, Life Member Committee Created to Manage the Fund. 3 of 24
IEEE Foundation and Life Member Fund IEEE Foundation was incorporated on February 16, 1973. IEEE Foundation is the philanthropic partner of IEEE. IEEE Foundation administers the Life Member Fund. The Life Member Committee (LMC) reports to both the IEEE Foundation and the IEEE MGA. 4 of 24
IEEE Life Members Committee (LMC) Act on the best interests of life members. (Life Member grade consists of Life Fellows, Life Senior Members and regular Life Members.) Suggest activities of interest for retired members and recommend Organization Units and Foundation for policies and activities appropriate for such members. Encourage continued activity and involvement of life members at all levels of IEEE. Partner with Foundation to operate Grants Program. 5 of 24
IEEE Life Members Committee (LMC) Be responsible for prudent management of expenditure of LMF in support of meaningful activities. Encourage establishing Life Member Affinity Groups (LMAG) so that life members can share their experiences in the Sections / Regions and remain active. 6 of 24

Life Member Engagement Life Members are encouraged to get involved in activities that: Excite students about STEM. Empower young people to pursue careers in IEEE S fields of interest. Preserve Legacy that IEEE members help create. Participate in fund raising for LMF, Publish LM Newsletter, Maintain LM Website. Recognize peers for their accomplishments. Encourage life members and retirees to stay active in IEEE. Lead or participate in Life Members Affinity Group events. Assist or be part of awards & recognition and nomination committees at the local areas in the region. 11 of 24
Life Members Affinity Group (LMAG) Funding LMAG Receives MGA Funding through the Section - $200 per LMAG for two or more activities in a year LMAG Receives MGA Incentive Funding through the Section - $75 for LMAG with 6 or More Activities in a year LMC Funds up to $2000 for LMAG Expenses for approved activities 12 of 24

Region 3 LMAG Present & Future Outlook Active Life member population grew from 1045 in 1945 to more than 38,000 in 2024. With 344 Sections and 10 regions the worldwide, LMAG numbers reached 162 in 2024. Region 3 currently has 23 Sections with LMAGs with 3565 life members affiliated. Region 3 has 18 Sections (>6 LM) with the potential to petition to form a new LMAG. 19 of 24

Summary The IEEE Life Member Committee (LMC) and Life Member Fund represents / supports over 38,000 Life Members worldwide. The LMC funds many projects of interest to Life Members. The LMC supports 162 Life Member Affinity Groups (LMAG) worldwide and 28 LMAG in Region 3. Life Members are encouraged to network with Life Members socially, through technical presentations and tours, be involved with STEM activities and technology history projects. Region 3 officers and the LMC encourage the remaining 18 sections in Region 3 to consider forming an LMAG with their Life Membership. 23 of 24
