ISBE Recommended Changes-What & Why? To assist educators and school districts across the state, we are streamlining endorsement grade spans. ROE, district, and IHE stakeholders provided feedback earlier this year supporting an enhanced grade span structure that aligns with grades identified in national standards and better meets the needs of hiring districts. The changes will eliminate redundancy between grade ranges (e.g. PE 5-8, 9-12, & K-12), reduce the number of endorsement applications for the same content area, and provide school districts and educators with greater flexibility to fill vacant positions within their districts. *New changes recorded in red on the following slides 4

Coursework & Fieldwork Considerations Discussion When it comes to fieldwork and coursework, are any programmatic changes necessary with the implementation of these streamlined grade ranges? Examples: Update methods courses to full grade spans (K-12 instead of 5-8) Requiring clinicals in three different grade levels for PK- 12 areas that were 5-8 or 9-12 prior Requiring multiple student teaching placements in different grade ranges 11
Coursework & Fieldwork Considerations Discussion If programmatic changes are needed to fieldwork and/or coursework, should those changes be required by ISBE or should those decisions be made at each IHE s discretion? If changes are left up to institutions, what information do you think ISBE should collect from each program? Verification of changes that have been made Verification of changes that will be made (and timeline) 12
Entitlement Considerations Discussion What considerations need to be taken into account for candidates currently in programs that may undergo changes? Should there be an overlap for entitlements under old grade ranges for current candidates before new grade ranges begin? Is that 1 year? 2? Something else? Will IHEs want to entitle for a new grade range if they feel their program is not prepared for a new grade range yet because they will be updating coursework or field experiences? 13
Open Discussion What other issues or considerations do you wish to share that have not yet been discussed? 14
Next Steps Our ISBE team will debrief using notes taken during today s conversation We will report back and share with you our recommendations for how these changes will be handled Please contact us with any other thoughts or ideas that come to you within the next week or two for consideration Equity Quality Collaboration Community 15
