Explore the effects of regular phone calls from a coordinating center on participant retention in a randomized clinical trial conducted by the DRCR Retina Network. Despite ~30,000 participant calls, the study found that these calls did not significantly enhance long-term participant retention.

  1. DRCR Retina Network Effect of Telephone Calls From a Centralized Coordinating Center on Participant Retention in a Randomized Clinical Trial (Protocol S) Supported through a cooperative agreement from the National Eye Institute; National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services EY14231, EY14229, EY018817 1

  2. Background The DRCR Retina Network coordinating center regularly contacts participants via phone to encourage retention Typically, contacts are made at baseline and every 6 months during a study Since its inception the DRCR has made ~30,000 participant calls. 2

  3. Purpose Within a multi-center clinical trial do regular phone calls to participants from a coordinating center improve long-term participant retention? 3

  4. Methods In DRCR Protocol S (PRP vs Ranibizumab for PDR) participants received routine phone calls from the Coordinating Center either as an Annual Contact: baseline, 6 months, and annually thereafter Baseline Contact: baseline only All participants could be contacted if visits were missed. Main outcomes: visit completion, excluding deaths, at 2 years (the primary outcome time point) and at 5 years (the final time point). 4

  5. Baseline Participant Characteristics Annual Contact N = 152 Baseline Contact N = 153 Treatment Group Bilateral Ranibizumab Prompt PRP Female Sex Non-White Race/Ethnicity Type 2 Diabetes Median HbA1c, % Median Age, years 30% 33% 37% 46% 48% 74% 8.7 53 28% 34% 38% 42% 47% 78% 8.5 51 5

  7. Conclusions Regular phone calls from a coordinating center to participants during follow-up in this randomized clinical trail did not improve long- term participant retention. 8
