The Burgfrieden (party truce) and the Spirit of 1914 When the war started everyone including the main socialist party the SPD, largest party in the Reichstag (parliament) was swept up in Patriotic fervour and supported the war in a Party Truce. Already in the fictionized film scene shown on the following slide based on a famous biography doubts grew during the actual experience of the brutal war. Not everyone agreed even at the start of this war. Read the document from the left wing politician Rosa Luxembourg in 1914. How is she critical of the war? Why might these attitudes be more popular by late 1918 than they were in 1914? Through Work to Victory! Through Victory to Peace!
