Reflecting on the past year, this article discusses the impacts of COVID-19 on air connectivity and presents solutions proposed by Mrs. Paule ASSOUMOU KOKI, DG of Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority. It highlights the coordination of health protocols in aviation, the shift in strategic objectives to include health issues for travelers, financial challenges faced by the aviation sector, and recommendations for governments and regulators to support the industry.

The past 12 months A year after we can better reflect on what is working and what is not working very well Thank ICAO, WHO, UNWTO, AFCAC, other international organizations for the work done during the last 12 months Acknowledge the ICAO Council s Aviation Revovery Task Force (CART) Cameroon never closed completely its airspace and didn t implemented quarantine but had a high level of pandemic control since may 2020: Test on arrival or Test checking before boarding Test checking before boarding Both test checking before boarding and arrival
One year after Recognize that there will be definitely two areas: pre-COVID and NOW NOW: we are not talking about post-covid as it is well recognized that we willl have to live with COVID for a long time It is a permanent change that we will have to integrate into our operations and one of the thing is that we must change the way we willcoordinate health protocols The aviation community must take the lead for the coordination of public health issues for aviation travellers, like we did for aviation safety then security: National Health Committee, Local Health Committee
NOW Before , 5 strategic objectives: Safety, Security, Capacity and efficiency, Economic development, Environment Now, 6 strategic objectives: Adding Health issues for travellers
NOW We are all bleeding financially: We must liberalize State has to come back and give direct financial support
Recommendations States to give the coordinating role for health protocols in aviation to aviation regulators Facilitates the establishment of new airlines Implement fully the granting of 5th freedom to African airlines that are requesting Give Direct Financial support to the aviation sector
