Introduction of NC(V) Programming and Robotics in TVET colleges aimed to align with the 4th industrial revolution strategy. Collaboration with Tshwane University of Technology and CISCO academy led to the development of the curriculum. Currently, 10 colleges across 10 campuses are offering the program after thorough preparation including lecturer training and planning workshops. Monitoring visits have shown progress with over 250 enrolled students as of May 2023.

  1. IMPLEMENTATION OF NC(V) PROGRAMMING & ROBOTICS AT TVET COLLEGES - PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES 19 July 2023 EKURHULENI EAST TVET COLLEGE SPRINGS CAMPUS

  2. Background NC(V) Programming and Robotics was introduced in January 2023 as part of the DHET s effort and contribution in the implementation of the 4th industrial revolution strategy. The curriculum was developed with the support of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and CISCO academy. Thirteen(13) TVET Colleges applied and after monitoring and verification, only 10 colleges and 11 campuses were approved to offer. Currently, only 10 campuses in 10 colleges are offering after withdrawal by one campus at the beginning of 2023 2

  4. Preparation for Implementation More than 30 Lecturers were trained in November 2022 at Tshwane University of Technology in two groups of 15 for five(5) days. This was followed by another lecturer two(2) day planning workshop held at Thekwini TVET and Durban University of Technology(DUT) in March 2023. The workshop focused on planning for assessment, establishment of assessment committees and setup of programming and Robotics laboratories. The DHET ICT, IT&CS Curriculum Support Teams assisted in the workshop 4

  5. Preparation for Implementation The CSTs are conducting bi-weekly meetings similar to the Cisco implementation meetings (joined together). Virtual training was also conducted with support from Cisco conducted by experts from Motheo TVET . The CST s for Programming and Robotics together with identified lecturers from implementing colleges are responsible for setting assessment tasks(ICASS and PATs) and distribute amongst themselves. 5

  6. TLP Monitoring: Progress and Challenges The Department conducted Teaching and Learning Plan monitoring and evaluation visits to all implementing colleges in April and May 2023 Progress As of May 2023, more than 250 students have been enrolled at all 10 campuses with the least number being 21 and largest being 90(call for concern but after visit, the concern was cleared) Most colleges were able to purchase necessary equipment's(minimum) required for Teaching and learning. 6

  7. TLP Monitoring: Progress and Challenges Progress Most of the colleges are converting existing classrooms/Practicum rooms to be suitable for Programming and Robotics. All agreed common assessment tasks have been successfully administered. Challenges Shortage of some resources due to lack of suppliers/or single suppliers. 7

  8. TLP Monitoring: Progress and Challenges Challenges continued While other colleges started with procurement in 2022, other colleges were still struggling even up to the first quarter of the 2023 academic year. While it is allowed for colleges to choose any fundamental(Maths or Maths Lit), one college chose Maths Literacy for the programme/stream which may pose challenges for articulation. One major challenge was on funding and NSFAS allowance for this group and SAQA recognition(all dealt 8 with)

  9. Current Activities Ongoing training supported by Cisco. Regular bi-weekly virtual meetings. Planned ISAT workshop for end of July: Inland colleges at Capricorn TVET and Coastal colleges at College of Cape Town. Planned NC(V) Level 3 preparation training in November for 2024 preparation. Preparation to conduct verification after receiving new applications to offer in 2024. 9

  10. Thank you
