  1. Implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act The Action Plan

  2. Action Plan The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous peoples and with other federal ministers, must prepare and implement an action plan to achieve the objectives of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the Declaration).

  3. Action Plan The action plan must be completed within 2 years, by June 21, 2023, and be tabled in Parliament and made public. It must include measures to: Tackle violence and discrimination against Indigenous peoples; Promote understanding through human rights education;

  4. Action Plan Ensure accountability with respect to implementation of the Declaration; and, Monitor the implementation of the action plan and for reviewing and amending it.

  5. Action Plan Areas Covered in the Declaration Equality and non-discrimination Civil and political rights (including identity, membership and community) Self-determination, self- governance, and recognition and enforcement of treaties Participation in Decision-making and strengthening Indigenous institutions Lands, territories, resources

  6. Action Plan Areas Covered in the Declaration Economic and social rights (including development and health) Education, information and the media Cultural, religious and language rights Implementation and redress Environment

  7. Action Plan Timeline Winter 2021/Spring 2022 Phase I engagement: Indigenous priorities Spring/Summer 2022 Policy period and development of draft action plan June 2022 First annual report Fall/Winter 2022 Phase 2 engagement: Validation of draft action plan June 2023 Second annual report Summer/Fall 2023 Action plan to be completed, tabled in Parliament and publicly released
