Implications of COP26 and Net Zero 2050
Explore the key objectives of COP26 and Net Zero 2050, including the commitment to keep the 1.5°C warming target alive, increase adaptation efforts, mobilize finance for mitigation and adaptation, and complete the Paris Rulebook. Discover whether achieving Net Zero by 2050 is a vital pathway or a dangerous distraction, as countries worldwide make pledges towards this ambitious goal. Uncover the challenges and recommendations surrounding the Net Zero transition, emphasizing the need for deep emission cuts, a just transition, and the preservation of Indigenous Peoples' rights amid potential conflicts over carbon markets and nature commodification.

COP 26 and Net Zero 2050 COP 26 Goals Keep the 1.5C warming target alive by cutting emission in half by 2030 and securing net-zero emissions by 2050 Increase adaptation efforts to protect communities and natural habitats Mobilize finance for both mitigation and adaptation Complete the Paris Rulebook governing a renewed international carbon markets
COP 26 and Net Zero 2050 Whether or Not You Think Net Zero by 2050 is: a) A Dangerous Distraction ; or b) The only pathway to Keeping 1.5C Alive It has now become the dominant framework within which official government and corporate climate change action plans are being designed and sold
How Many Countries Have Net Zero Pledges?
Responding to the Net Zero Challenge Net zero 2050 not Real Zero and the difference is a dangerous distraction if it results in reduced political pressure to dramatically reduce carbon emissions now in favour of reliance on future industrial scale carbon removal technologies like direct air carbon capture or CCUS Canada s Net Zero plan must include deep cuts to carbon emissions of at least 60% by the end of this decade Emission cuts must be paired with firm declining caps on fossil fuel production, a moratorium on future fossil fuel projects and a hard deadline for the planned phase out of fossil fuels in favour of renewables Resist the further commodification of nature via carbon offsetting market schemes, which will not reduce emissions and threaten further displacement of Indigenous People from their tradition territories Redouble efforts for a Just Transition to a much lower average level of energy and material production and consumption based on earth s biocapacity and respect for Indigenous Sovereignty
There will be Article 6 conflicts * Indigenous Peoples have strongly challenged the use of international markets for carbon credits * Nature s ability to absorb carbon shouldn t be turned into a commodity that can be bought and sold * Too often green grabbing , creating conflicts over land access and tenure, undermining Indigenous Rights and leading to non-sustainable development
